For Rolex bracelet screws, the 1.6mm size is the best fit. For other watches, I have used a 1.4, 1.2 and maybe 1.0mm. I like Bergeon or Horotec brand screwdrivers.

Depends what you want to do with them? Just change links? Then a 1.6mm Bergeon or Horotec screwdriver works. Want to work on your movement? Get the ten piece Bergeon screwdriver set. FYI, regular 1.6mm screwdrivers are sharpened vs the seadweller screwdriver which is flat. The link screws are flat bottomed so the Rolex screwdriver works most securely as it fits the slot tightly.

I woudn't tell anybody what to buy.
However, Rolex bought controlling interest in Bergeon a few years back to ensure that the quality of their tools was up to the standards they desired for their own watchmakers..

The link you have to ebay are the better drivers as they are all stainless steel. The others are chromed brass but unless your using them all day every day your not going to wear the crome off. Either one will do the job. So will the cheaper french drivers.

That's interesting about Rolex buying an interest in a tool company
So basically Rolex owns the tool company.

I now a few guys advise using the driver from the SD tool kit as it seats better in the screw head but how about any of the sets listed above ?
I have a Bergeon driver, fail to remember which one but it doesn't seat right and never really been happy with it so was looking to replace it. |

As Mike has said, the standard Bergeon screwdrivers are watchmakers screwdrivers.
The Sea Dweller screwdriver is made to fit the 1.6mm x 0.3mm slot in a modern Rolex oyster (etc) bracelet screw head.

Cool did kind of get that but was seeing if there is a Bergeon or equivalent that is a match for the SD screwdriver or should I just source a SD driver ?

It has a short and small diameter handle to fit in the little SD tool pouch, so I find that there is not enough to hold onto and get a good grip.. I think that a good grip is just as important as a good fit on the screw head to avoid damage.. If you are going to change screws often, invest in a good quality screwdriver meant for the job.. The Bergeon tools have replaceable tips so if it gets worn, you just replace the tip; smooth turning heads on the handle so you can hold a fingertip there while your thumb and fingers control the movement and are the "snap-on" equivalent in the watchmaker world.

i have two 1.4 screwdrivers for my panerai, 1 no brand name on it and 1 burgeon.
1 was given to me in a watch purchase from Oscar, it doesn't have a brand name on it, the tip is blued steel and it works perfectly. i later purchased a burgeon of the same size from otto frei, the tip is very slightly different and it tends to slip out of the slot & causes scratches. i prefer the no brand name one... it says "mod.dep" on 1 side and "france" on the other and has the blued tip. burgeon is on the right. thanks Oscar ps i am crazy about the SD tool for the rolex'!!!!

I file/sharpen the right size screwdriver to taper the end vs a V shape tip. I find this works best for me.

I bought one made for eyeglasses at Staples for like $1.19 and it works fine. I most have took links put links in about 5 times on my datejust superjubilee band and also removed a link on my sub-c band with no issues at all yet.. I could see how that screwdriver posted by padi56 would help in not scratching the band but if your carefull u should be fine...
When I was posting about a removing links on the furom someone gave some good advice about bringing it to a jewler.. They said no one is going to more carefull then you the owner of that watch so might as well do it yourself! |
