YachtMaster... Why?

Rolex always marketed the Submariner to sailors, and then they come out with this new model Yacht Master (always thought the name sounded laughable). Other than more money, why would Rolex think to expand their line witch a watch functionally--and very similar in design--to the Submariner?

The Yacht Master II is a Yacht Timer.
The Yacht Master I is a Sub in disguise.

My Plat YM is my favorite watch and gets more wrist time than my other Rolex watches (inluding Daytona TT).

We're in agreement on something, the Plat/SS YM is one of my favourites.

Yup, I guess we're not that "uncivilized" after all.

The YMs (both I and II) are not watches I would buy. But to each his own.

Ditto - this is why Rolex makes a variety of sport models

I still like the Sea-Dweller.

The YM 1 is not the sub. The submariner was probably only pitched to yatchsmen because there was nothing else in the Rolex line that appealed to them.

Notice the depth rating. YM 1 good for 100m, sub good for 300m. YM 1 has the bidirectional bezel. It's splitting hairs, but there are differences in the two watches. I don't knowif the bezel on the YM 1 can be used for the 10 minute timing deal similar to what is available with the YM 2. Don't get me wrong, I understand it doesn't do the actual timing that the YM 2 does. Just wondered if you could use the bezel for something similar.

I happen to think that the YM I is one of the most attractive models that Rolex has produced. I have the Sub, and I would not hesitate in buying a YM I. They are NOT the same thing at all....

I like the YM better than the Sub as well. It just seems like a more dressy watch while still being a sport watch. Perfect name too!! Just the other day an oolder gentleman (75+years old) pulled up in his 80+ft yacht for fuel, he walked out while his mate fuel the vessel and he was wearing an 18K Yachtmaster! He didnt look the type to go diving or fighting a blue marlin, but he was a YACHTMASTER!!

Yep...The YM was designed to appeal to folks who like water sports, but at a higher price point than the sub...

Functionally the YM and the Sub are identical (painted font and click spring are irrelevent), and all the parts interchange..

We have , TWO, 2, too, Rolex Yachtmasters.
YM I and YM II
They are not of the same species.
YM II is a Yacht Timer, and is a functional tool, albeit a bit dear.

YM I indicates date and time in a celebrated manner.

Cheers to the gentleman who is still yachting at 75.

He was the young man who was wearing a 5513 racing the Stars Worlds off the Cuban Coast in the 50's.

I am a friend of a gentleman who fits that profile. He still sports the 55.

Let me clarify, by Yachting, I meant a Viking, not a sailing yacht

Viking doesn't have the 82's in production yet, must have been a 74. Still a big boat.

Wikipedia
"In modern use, the term yacht applies to two rather different classes of sea vessel, sailing yachts and power yachts."

A more mature gentleman may of necessity choose a power yacht.
At some point it becomes rather arduous to hike out over the rail of a dinghy or crank a winch on a sled.

Sometimes yer jus too old too catch that ewe.

I dont think only the old choose a poweryacht. In my experience it is a choice of lifestyle if they choose power or sail.

That's where the Nonsuch 36 fits in for a while. Pretty good sailing boat, too bad it looks so........... Nonsuch-ish.

Actually cat rigged boats are OK in my experience.
Too bad the sailmaker doesn't have the hang of it for those particulad vessels.

To clarify, I am a boat and yacht broker. In other words, I sell pretty much everything, sail, power, hell I have even sold hovercrafts! So I think to group any demographic of people as to say only old folks buy power yachts is wrong. But what do I know?
