Visual inspection

So I'm thinking of buying a Rolex and like to take a look at the movement during the transaction. Keeping in mind that I cannot carry a back case opening tool, what do you guys usually do if you want to take a look inside?

Thanks, San Ramon

Are they usually ok with that, do you set up an appointment, how much the typical AD charges, etc?

Thx, San Ramo

Some are, some aren't. Definitely call before and ask.

As always, buy the seller before you buy the watch!

That's for sure, hopefully the seller is cool with the hassle!

Thanks

Call and offer to pay for the technician's time and they'll appreciate your consideration and likely open it for free.

Even on the DSSD the case back is only a lid much like a lid on a jar you buy at the supermarket. As long as you have the correct case back die and tool it would be the same as opening any other Rolex case. But the only problem after is pressure testing to that extreme depth. At the moment only Rolex can do that, but most high street watchmakers could test to 300m.Now if any watch passes a 300m test then it would be safe for scuba and general water activities. And any watchmaker could get the back off any Rolex watch if he/she has the correct tool its not rocket science its just like unscrewing a jam pot lid.

Walk away if the seller isn't... Plenty of great sellers here.

As a seller, I'd only be ok AFTER it was purchased. If something is wrong, I'd refund but I would not crack open a case prior to purchase. If the buyer flakes, I'm now stuck with having to fully disclose to the next potential buyer.

I forgot to ask. Do you know what you're looking for? Why are you opening the back? If you've done your due diligence on the seller and the watch, this is usually unnecessary.

Agree 100%, the seller knows the watch is real. I would never allow it pre-sale, what if the person doing the checking scratches the watch then i'm on the hook.

I just sold a watch, a Breitling Navitimer and did just that. Met the buyer at an AD, they actaully looked at all the numbers on the watch, the paperwork, etc and ok'd it without even opening the watch and charged the guy $60 and that included an apprasial.

No, no, I totally agree with all sellers that once you agree on a price the deal is done, period! The final relief test is by opening the back case to look at the movement at the purchaser's expense (including accidental scratches, nicks, etc by the AD). The seller should not object and the buyer will feel relieved walking away knowing that the thousands of dollars handed over where well worth it, plus AD expenses incurred!

I think this cleared up our understanding!

Once the watch is purchased, the buyer can do whatever he wants to the watch.

I toally agree and would never allow that to happen to my watch before I had the cash in my hand.
