214270 vs 14060m
Hey guys I'm in need of advice, I understand that there are already a few posts between the 39mm explorer i and the sub ND hopefully if I could explain why I'm having a hard time choosing I could get answers that could help me choose (if that even made any sense... haha)
I've had my eye on the Explorer I 36mm 114270 for a while already, but now my local AD said that they've discontinued that model and all they have is the 39mm. I really like how the 36mm fit on my small wrists and how its easy to slip under a shirt cuff (cause I was really looking for a smaller watch as a dress watch without being a datejust... sorry guys i really don't like the cyclops). I tried the 39mm Exp. and somehow it looks a little weird to me, like the dial got bigger but the bracelet and hands stayed the same size. Maybe I could get used to it but I don't want to end up regretting it if I don't get used to it. Does anyone else think the changes they made feel kind of incomplete? Now I'm also looking at the 14060m Sub ND also cause everything seems to be in proportion, Bond pulled it off in a tux, plus its an iconic watch. However, i already have a dive watch (Omega Seamaster Pro Chrono) and it feels kind of redundant to get a Sub and I won't even consider giving up my Seamaster cause I got it from my father prior to my wedding so its got sentimental value for me. Also, the sub is so popular that everyone I know with a rolex has either a DJ or a sub. Plus I worry about the risk of buying a 6k+ watch and have it mistaken for a fake. For all the sub owners out there do people really ever think its something else but an authentic Rolex cause the design is so popular and widely copied? What do you guys suggest? Which one would look better in a suit? And which one would hold more value? The common yet iconic Sub or the rare yet more discreet Explorer? |

Well first you should not buy a watch just to hold its value you should buy the watch you want to wear it.And afraid no Rolex watch is rare today the the Explorer does not sell in the same volume like the subs but rare no.If your main priority is value then its got to be the sub, but in general all the Rolex models hold there re-sale value but in general the subs will be a little better.Well if you buy from a reliable source its very very doubtful you would get a fake from a AD or any of our trusted sellers on TRF always buy the seller.

Probably 14060m for your first although I picked the 214270 due to the newer more substantial feeling bracelet.

I really like the 39mm... & its a current model (introduced at Basel last year) that wont likely be replaced for decades... unlike the now out of production 14060

From what I just read, go find a 36mm Explorer LNIB or in great condition. You won't feel guilty that you settled for a 39mm if you don't like it, you keep the Omega, and now you have a Sport Omega and a classic Rolex.
I would personally try to get the 14060, maybe talk to your Dad about selling the Omega and putting the funds towards a Rolex. You can even get the Rolex inscribed if you want to retain the fact that your Dad contributed some money towards it. If that is not an option, make sure the watch you end up buying is the one you really want. You already know deep down which one you really want, so get that one. Save if you have to, do not buy and settle. I speak from experience as I purchased a Seamaster and realized, this did not satisfy my want for the true Sub... Hope that helps. |

Go with the Sub.
If you want the Explorer later, there will be plenty of them.

I think I prefer it if most people think its a fake. :)
A WIS will know, as do the sales people at watch stores, and that's what I do appreciate. :) |

If you think the Explorer 39mm doesn't look right, then take it off your list.
I think the 14060M would be a very different watch from the SMP chrono, which is a lot bigger and thicker. The 14060M is very comfortable to wear all day. And simple look just works. I would definitely go with 14060M, and I did.

Thanks guys!
Hey guys, thanks for all the input! Obviously from the responses here, the clear answer is the 14060m. So I did what Sir Edmund Hillary did and took a risk (although not life threatening, but in this economy who knows...). I went with with a brand spanking new Explorer I. I went back and wore it again, it's actually fits me well, and 5x lighter and more comfortable than my Omega SMP Chrono.
I guess I was just in shock initially because I've had my eye on the 36mm for a pretty long time, and with that kind of desire for a watch even a little change is hard to accept at first. However it was always the minimalistic design that attracted me to the watch and that minimalistic design hasn't changed. Anyway, I'm now a proud owner of an Explorer I and it comes with meaning. I've always been the extremely cautious type, but looking at this watch will remind me that sometimes you have to stop second-guessing yourself and go with your gut feeling. Although the recommendations I received for the most part became the opposite of what I did, I still value the input and I will continue to look to this community for my rolex inquiries. One thing is for sure, due to the popularity of the Sub ND, even in this thread alone, I'm certain if ever I'd want to get one later on in life, there will be plenty to choose from in the certified preowned market that costs lower than the current retail price. Thanks guy! |

Get the one you prefer. For me I'd get the Sub over the Exp.

You need to look in the mirror and see who you are and what you like and what is your personality. When I bought the SMP I was 27yrs old... Rotating 60 minute bezel for work, sports and outdoor life was who I was back then at the same time I was fashion concious. At 42yrs old my life style has changed and the Xplr describes who I am now and what I like. My wife laughed and thinks at 65 I'll get a nice retirement watch like a Day-Date II 218239... Hmmmmmm... I better start saving since she giving me the advanced But I think you already know which one you want and I was EXACTLY in the same boat. Enjoy your soon to be new Rolex... I'm enjoying mine |

Eihter would have been a good choice, but I have to say the Explorer has really caught my eye with its elegant simplicity!! Congrats - wear it in good health!

If it was the 114060 then i would say the sub. But since its the older one then i recommend the exp39mm.

Well both of your choices have slim profile (sits low on the wrist) so tight cuffs moments is a cinch. Both have no dates (hence no cyclops) which was also one of my decision points last year. IMO and in the end, i chose a 14060M because it is a SUBMARINER, i have always wanted a Sub plus as you say it's iconic. Nothing wrong with lots of Sub wearer out there, it just means you are in better company.
About you worry on being mistaken for a fake, if it were me, i would not care bec I know it is not so that is all that matters to me. My 14060M says Hi. |

Great shot and great decision, although I must say I like both options. I just picked up a F series 14060M last two days ago, my first Sub ever and I'm glad I finally took the plunge, so far it's much better than I ever expected.

39mm Explorer if it really is between those 2. If you're open to other watches, I'd say 42mm Explorer II or Milgauss :)
It doesn't matter if it's your first Rolex or not, what's important is that you like it. |
