Kind of scary really because it's so true. It kind of makes me want to move to a third world country.

While these descriptions are hyperbolic charicatures of our society in many instances, I think you could make the argument that the joke works equally well with 1977 vs. today, without needing to hearken back all the way to 1957.

I think by this point entitlement and litigiousness pervades our culture, from top to bottom. You'll find entitlement philosophy coming from a trust fund baby arguing 15% is a fair capital gains rate (it isn't) as often as you'll find a poor person in the inner city wanting their gummint handouts and as often as you'll find one neighbor suing another over a dog bite. It's sickening at all levels, and I say this both as a citizen and a lawyer.

You could even insert 1987 and it would still show the contrast

i remember getting slapped with rulers and what not by teachers in the late 80s

Oh yeah, a proper school.....great days, when teachers gave as good as they got.

Back then, if I ever bad mouthed a neighbour (or a teacher) or did something naughty and I got a clip around the ear, it was because I was in the wrong. If I hadn't received the clip, and my father found out later what I'd done, thanks would go to the neighbour and I'd get a worse clip for my efforts.

Nothing my school teachers did, nor my neighbours, did me any mental or physical harm. To the contrary.

Today though, a legal nightmare for all concerned regarding bringing up children, be it teachers, neighbours or parents.

Nanny states don't work because they fail to factor in human nature and common sense.

Still think I'd rather take my chances in 2010 than in 1957 - life expectancy, poverty, healthcare, etc. Human development is uneven but ultimately onwards and upwards.
