For those who seek a BLACK Rolex

For those who wish they had a Blackout Rolex the British Soldiers got when stationed in South Africa in the 1960's.

None of the watches on this site are from the 60's.

They all look like badly PVD'd standard Rolex watches to me.

I kinda like the GMT with the gold bezel, not feeling the rest.

Those look kind of funky. Not sure if the dials looks weird. Or the coating looks weird.

Something is "off"...

The flat black isn't all that appealing.

It looks like they've been painted with Em-Nu, a name which every Marine should recognize.

About 350 Rolex's were procured by Alejandro Alcocer, a designer who decided to black them out himself. I don't know what his PVD method is, but you guys are right, kinda odd looking. He has an Explorer II listed at $19,500.

I read an article in a men's mag recently about this......supposedly Rolex made some black watches (no mention of which model) for the British army personnel stationed in S. Africa......and now a designer got hold of some pre-owned Rolex watches & had them blacked out....but they don't look as good as the new ones done in the UK.
I would like to see if there's a photo of the black Rolex watches made for the army.

I like PVD but only if they're original from the manufacturer. Big problem is warranty /service centre issues
Might as well spend 5k on a watch with a propellor as a rotor

Looks like they were coated with Cerakote or another baked-on ceramic based paint.

Agreed. Didn't look like PVD to me. And I bet it looks awful when the Cerakote comes off with wear.

Also probably the most expensive Cerakote job ever at a ~$10k premium.

Looks like they had a hard time applying the cerakote on the non removable links as you can see a small missed part on the nipple gmt.

MCWW does a much better job of cerakote on watches and for $150 if it really tickles your fancy. You'll notice most of MCWW's gallery are just the watch head (on nato) and probably for that reason.

Still not my cup of tea either!

If I was going for a black Rolex, I think I's rather have one of these. At least it looks as though there's been a bit more thought and detail put into them.
