Flip Pepsi GMT for new Exp 2?

I wear my Sub-C most of the time & work in my Panerai 177 a couple days a week. My Pepsi GMT 16710 (Z serial) rarely gets out of the safe, and then on weekends only. I had to have the Pepsi, said I'd never sell it & now...its just okay.

The white Explorer II 216570 has caught my eye. I think the Exp II would get more wrist time & is more of a contrast to the Sub-C, but I'm a little concerned that nice late serial GMT IIs are tough to find.

Would you flip the Pepsi for the Exp II (assuming that "both" isn't an option)? I suppose another option would be to switch in a coke bezel insert and see if the GMT sings any louder.

That's kind of a difficult one but since you don't wear it much I'd say do it! Once you get used to the new style Rolex watches, the older models feel really dated imo.

No way Magee! The pepsi gmt is such an icon, you will regret the move IMHO. Try the coke first before you do anything rash. I have a late pepsi and a subc too and I find that a nice modern-vintage combo.maybe you can save for the explorer(this watch will be available for a long time to come.)

Get the coke and all-black bezels. Switch it up with the Pepsi bezel. It'll look like a new watch.

OK, I am going to get killed for saying this. The pepsi is an amazing watch and such an icon for Rolex but it has had its day in the sense that it is not the new hot thing... It is an awesome watch, and IMO the most comfortable Rolex I have ever owned, it just works IMO To me the Pepsi would be a keeper for a collection however that being said I am a flipper and have owned several and will own another again I am sure.

If you are not wearing it I say flip it and grab something you will use, it is a watch after all and meant to be used not sit in a safe

I loved my older GMT until the GMT IIC came out which pretty much made the older one redundant, sad as its such an iconic watch which is a very nice and classy watch.

I decided to flip mine and get only watches that I wear.

Good luck

I wouldn't do it. It's so versatile with all the inserts and band options, and it's great looking on a jubilee. It's a classic. I wear mine and enjoy mine a lot.

However this is not me and my Pepsi, it's you and what you want to do. Do what's right for you.

If its a late Z serial it may have the 3186 inside. Keep it if it has.

I flipped my 'M' Pepsi for the same reason and have no regrets. Loved it as my every day piece for the last few years..... and then the Sub-C came along.

Interesting question - In my experience, most of us are a balance between wanting something new and fashionable, and wanting things we know are classic and tasteful.

If people get too much to either side, we call them dumb and tasteless, or old and grouchy.

Most of us are somewhere in the middle.

I am currently mostly wearing my pam 112 (fashionable, but i love it!) and my gmt ii mostly sits in its drawer.

But i know things will reverse in time, and i would regret ever getting rid of it!
My honest opinion is in ten years' time, the current crop of rolex's will look like dated crap. Load up on them with caution!

No such luck. If it had the 3186 movement it would be an easy choice...I'd sell it for sure! Talk about overpriced...

Anyway, thanks for all your advice. For now I think I'll walk it over to Chicago RSC and have them swap in a coke bezel.

You're absolutely right in that late GMT's Z/M serials are hard to come by so it is a tough choice indeed. I'm not sure a coke bezel will make a huge difference. One thing is for sure though, the new explorer is awesome. Looks amazing on the wrist. I have a late Z 3185 GMT II that I'm about to sell, but it's not going to be easy parting with it I can tell you.

Regardless of how "iconic" a watch is, ultimately the point of this hobby is to get enjoyment out of wearing the watches you own. I have faced this dilemma many times in my watch-collecting pursuits and have always been happiest when I follow this advice...if I am not going to wear it and enjoy it, then I will trade it for something that suits me better.

I traded an "iconic" 14060M for a Sub C and have never been happier. I also traded an "iconic" 16600 for a new DSSD and never regretted it for a moment. Buy what you like. Wear it. Repeat.
