Wearing Rolex on cruise and sightseeing

Hi all, I'm going to the eastern Carribbean on a cruise in the near future. How safe is it o wear my SS GMT off the ship such as in St Martin, St Thoms and Nassau?

Cruise ports are notorious but I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a more low-key model I'd take that along instead. I've traveled all through the Caribbean and Eastern Europe with my watch and had no problems. But, I wear an old AirKing.

Maybe leave it in your cabin safe if you're too worried.

I don't think you'll have any problems, enjoy your trip.....

Have made that trip many times wearing sub, AP, etc with no issue. There is certainly no problem on board and the areas the passengers are sent to wander are very safe, IMO.

If you feel unsafe when you get off the boat just put it in your pocket. If you feel really worried, however, bring a G Shock instead.

Since that Trojan condoms factory caught fire the price of rubber has gone though the roof. I'd take the GMT. (for safeties sake).

You'll be in good company. Not only will you see many wearing them, you'll see many places selling them. St Thomas has the best Patek selctions I have seen.

Just use your common sense as to were to go and travel while on the island, and you should be fine.

Just conceal yourself among the gold Rolex wearing passengers and you'll deflect any attention.

No worries. Just use common sense, regardless of the country. I have never had a problem.

I actually went to that cruise a few weeks ago, and believe me I have never seen so many people at once wearing their rolexes. No problems on the ship, safe ... even when you get off, those countries are relatively safe and you will feel totally fine. St. Thomas is a shopping heaven and you will see lots of swiss watch stores, make sure you check out patek and rolex stores :))

We've been to the Caribbean many times and never had any problems in fact you will see many high end jewellers selling a vast range of expensive watches.. I bought my Sub in Antigua and my son's Seamaster in Barbados. The usual rules apply however, stick to the tourist areas and try not to be too conspicuous and you should be fine.

I cruise 3-4x a year. You are fine. Stay in the normal areas and don't go in any dark back alleys. Rolexs on a cruise is a dime a dozen. Last time I was on one I saw people that would put Mr T to shame and women wearing rings that looked like golf balls. Stop worrying and enjoy!!!

The Isands are fine - if you stay on the beaten path. Rent a Jeep and go joy riding - your Rolex and your life are in jeopardy. After 20 plus Caribbean, east and west, cruises this my opinion.

I have to disagree here. I think fearing for your life is a bit of an exaggeration. I have been just about to every island on cruises and business. I visited ports where cargo is unloaded and I can say that those are less than desirable places to visit. Yes, there is a level of danger in those zones but I would have to argue that it is not directed at tourists. When there is crime, it is usually amongst those in the same "world".

While I understand that things can and do happen, the governments of those countries have ZERO tolerance for crime against tourists. It is their source of income. Pick pocket, begging, scams (Here's one. I was in St. Lucia where this kid came up asking for $10 donation to help his soccer team compete in the Eastern Caribbean championships. Clip board in hand, he said that he was going to appear on their national channel and he would mention my wife and I's name for helping. I laughed so hard at the outlandish story, that I gave him $5 for creativity and asked where I could get a soda for him and my wife since she was thirsty. The kid smiled, thanked me and took me into a back road where we found the best BBQ fish with conch being made by locals in a block party.) Point is to not show fear, relax and enjoy the locals as much as they enjoy you. Remember that while you are at work and your daily routine, theirs is dealing with tourist and finding away to make you part with your money. Not violence, just tugging at heart strings. Show them respect but don't act like you're consumed or scared.

Maybe it is just me, but I NEVER go down the beaten path. When I go on cruises, it is funny because we always see the tourists head in one direction and we go in the complete opposite. When back on board, I talk to others and their stories are all the same. Site seeing, crappy food, gift shop. That's not my idea of a vacation. I go to the heart of the city and work my way back. That way you really see the city.

Woof.

You couldn't pay me to take a cruise. Why not fly somewhere, immerse yourself in the people and culture and/or relax...vs get on a floating prison with stale, ill-prepared food and visits to ports of calls full of t-shirt shops and tourist traps.

Blech.

We have been on over 50 cruises and always take our fine jewelry and Rolex watches. When I go to the beach I tend to wear something more like a luminox or swatch. That being said, I always pay attention to what people have on their wrist and notice men wearing not only their sub's but also presidents at the beaches in the Caribbean all of the time!

Thanks for the helpfull input. A joy to hear your thoughts

To the OP, just always be aware of your surroundings as you would in any place. If in doubt, dont make yourself stand out like a sore thumb.

Insure the watch, exercise common sense especially on the ports and most importantly have fun.
