Boy, did I make a find today. Captain Nemo would be proud.

I was out running around thinking about buying a new ipod. I like the new ipod touch, but with only 16GB of memory, it is pretty small. And at $399, it just didn't blow up my skirt.

So on the way home, I stop in at the jewelry store I purchased my Rolex Sub Date. They are a Patek Philippe dealer, and I mentioned to my salesperson that the new Vacheron Constantin Patrimony auto was a really nice looking watch. She wanted to see what it looked like, so we started looking through some watch magazine they have and couldn't find it. When we were paging through the magazines, there was a Patek Nautilus advertisement. I told her that if I ever saw a plain Nautilus (not the power reserve or the chrono) I would buy it.

She got this evil smile on her face and said wait here. (she did the exact same thing when I got my Sub... they keep the good stuff in the vault). Kelly goes in the back and I start getting really really excited. Like vomit excited. She comes out with her hands behind her back, and won't show me. I tell her no way do you have one. No way.

Yes way. The Nautilus was introduced 2 years ago, and they received a power reserve and a standard 5711/1A Nautilus yesterday. This was the first ones they had received. Ever. And Patek really likes them cause they sell a ton. Their waiting list for the 5711/1A was 9 people long. The power reserve was already gone. Kelly said that if I took it today I could have it, but it would be gone monday morning by 9 am. She was letting me have the first shot because, A) I had already spent $5000+ with her and B) they preferred the watch be sold locally. Plus I had to spend more than retail, but I knew that was coming. The time this all took place was 4:30 pm today (Saturday). I had one hour to decide if I was going to spend a metric ton of cash on an extremely rare timepiece.

I felt like I wanted to hurl again.

What to do. What to do.

It's the price of a CAR!!!! They are mega rare. Ultra rare. You do not see them around. At all. This is an opportunity that doesn't happen very often.

It's the price of a damn nice used car!!!

I wandered around the shop, looking at other stuff. A friend of mine who works there came out from the back (he's a goldsmith) and asks whats up. I say I am thinking about this here watch. He glances at it and sees the Patek box and says very cool.

I then show him the watch in the box. His eyes got huge. He had this confused look on his face. He said, when the hell did that thing come in. Did we get a shipment from Jupiter or something? He couldn't believe it. He said I could buy that watch, hold it for 6 months and then make thousands on it.

I still want to hurl, but it's getting better.

I look around some more. I love that damn watch.

Kelly says if I want to I can put 1/3 down now and pay the rest over the next 3 months. Click.

I'll take it.

Now I have this huge grin on my face that I can not get rid of. My wife is going to KILL ME. I mean KILL ME.

But I got my dream watch. I will post pics after I get it sized.

Oh yea!!! A PP Nautilus is definitely on my wish list. It's tied for first on the list with an 18kt black sub. A PP is definitely a thing of beauty and a joy to have on your wrist. Congrats on the watch and the cool story.

It's about the same price as a new 18K day date, so not so bad.

What is the metal?

Stainless or white gold? When you say the same price as an 18K Day Date I think of over $20,000 Is that what you are saying?

Stainless. The stainless version of the Nautilus is doing the same thing as the stainless Daytona.

Wow. Well, I know how it feels to shell out for the 18K GMT C. Not sure if I could shell that out for a stainless steel watch with no complications, but considering the scarcity and the top end manufactory movement, it sounds like you found something you love which might also be an investment.

Congratulations.

Congrats on your new Patek. I know how you are feeling. I felt the same way when I bought my Patek a few months ago.

They truly are a special time piece. When you have it on, you will not be able to take your eyes off it. I wear my Patek more than any other watch these days. I cant wait until you post your images.

What is so special about it besides the fact they are rare?

Congrats by the way

Porthole design, waterproof to 120M, Sapphire crystal case back , Patek Philippe calibre 315 SC movement, absolutely beautiful design. And as you said, extremely rare. The local authorized dealer has received only one since they were introduced two years ago, and Patek likes them a lot. I bought it. I paid "a lot".

These watches have been produced for over 30 years, they range from several 1000 dollar for quartz versions to 750 000 dollar for the titanium version.
Like the Jumbo but a bit too expensive for what it delivers.

The REF. 5711/1A is one of the new models introduced last year. The original model was the REF. 3700/1A, introduced in 1976. There have been some special edition titanium versions, that were released in limited numbers (like one or two). The earlier versions also came in solid gold, two tone and stainless with men's and womens models. The ladies versions came in Quartz, which most watch manufacturers offer. Ladies change watches and don't like to reset them after the power reserve runs out.

My 5711/1A has a caliber 315 SC automatic movement, not quartz.

Edit: Any watch over $100 is jewelry. I can't stand solid gold watches, so this was a perfect fit for me.

Edit2: I would love to have an original from 1976. They go for unbelievable amounts of money, though.

That's exactly what I like about it. I don't like solid yellow gold watches, so it was a good fit for me.

Then again, if I get sick of it I know I can turn around and sell it for what I paid for it easily.

Which ones? The original 3700/1A? I don't know what the original sales price on them was, but that's got to be quite an appreciation.
