I think it is primarily an issue of taste and what capabilities you want out of a watch. As far as being practical the Daytona doesn't have a date feature which for me would be an issue. Good luck and welcome.

Hmmm. Don't often see "practical" and "Rolex" in the same sentence.

The Daytona has a Chrono function which is pretty useless as far as accuracy goes by today's ELECTRONIC standards. So, if you are talking just PRACTICAL, the GMT-II makes more sense. On the other hand, go with the one which smiles back at you. Cheers - JJ

I actually own both the SS GMT ceramic (as of tonight ) and SS Daytona (and SS Sub Date).
I first bought a SS Sub Date six months ago. (Was torn between the GMT and Sub but at that time the Sub was more appealing.) Then just over a month ago had the opportunity to get a SS Daytona white dial. I was at my AD a few days ago and saw the SS GMT and found I really like it. I went everyday to look at it and decided tonight to pick it up (before someone else did). I'll likely sell the Sub as I "shouldn't" really have three Rolexes now. Anyway, back to your question (thought it's not an "exact" answer): Daytona I love the look of the Daytona. I've used the chrono function at the track (didn't need the "exactness" of an electronic timer) and have had fun with it. I think the white dial looks really "smart" and like to wear it when I am dressed up (not that the Sub is a slouch by any means when I am dressed up). I've also worn it while golfing and dressed in sweats. I think it can be an everyday watch, but for me it's more of a "dressy" watch. Sub I really like the look of the Sub with it's black dial and SS look. I feel like I can wear it all the time, dressed up or not (though I lean towards the Daytona for "dressier" times). I don't know that I'll ever use the Sub for it's design (diving) but I wear it in the shower I think the Sub is slightly more "practical". GMT I love the look of the GMT and it continues to grow on me the more I see it. I think that it's just like the Sub in that it can be an everyday watch. Be worn when dressed down or up. And as far as functionality, I will definitely use the time-zone function sooner than the "diving function" of the Sub. Admittedly I think I smile more when I see the Daytona on my wrist (vs the Sub), but I'll definitely be wearing the GMT a lot for a while It just comes down to personal preference! |

Definately, the SS Daytona is the hardest one of them to get and you could re-sell it for a nice profit if you choose to do so. But if you need a date function, the GMT is "more practical" I guess, and is much easier to get hold on, but then again you would not get a profit by re-selling it.

The Daytona is not (or at least was not) available for less than $11,500 on the "fluff" market. The GMT's street price is half the price of the Daytona. Buy the GMT and help remove the oxygen from the Daytona hype furnace.
