It is hard to tell how long it takes, but I know that it took Rolex at LEAST five years to make the Daytona Cal. 4130 mvt. (introduced in year 2000)
Probably, Rolex even started the initial steps to make the new mvt. soon after the launch of the predecessor mvt. Cal. 4030 "Zenith" in 1988 since this mvt (although is was modified) was a "bugbear" for Rolex as it was the ONLY Rolex mvt. left that was not entirely made in-house. Also, if you consider the CRB (Chapter Ring Branding), the first examples of the CRB were issued on the DJ's in 2004, but first now does the SS Sub Date (newest M-series) received the CRB. Nothing really happens quickly at Rolex!

In a Watchtime article last year (or the year before?), I believe they quoted someone from Rolex who said Rolex was on a 10 year plan to update their entire line, or something to that effect. As I recall, they started with the Daytona and Day-Date in 2000. Is that about right?

Basel Show Report 2000. CLICK! But I would say that this year 2007 is even more noteworthy when you consider that Rolex introduced TWO new mvts. (YM II and Milgauss - the GMT II mvt already existed before 2007 in the TT and YG GMT II models) besides all the updates to the classic watches like AK, Date and Perpetual: Baselworld 2007. CLICK!
