Question: Why have TT Rolexes fallen in value?

It seems to me that pre-ceramic two-tone subs have not held their value very well.....especially when considering the original msrp.
Why is that?? I would think with the price of gold, they would do nothing but increase? What gives?

SS models are more popular, so they don't take as big of a hit. if you're a fan, enjoy the used market!

SS models, especially in the sports range (Sub, GMT, Daytona) are _way more_ popular than TT or gold models of the same watch. Smaller 2nd hand market means lower prices.

I've heard the replacement cost of the TT bracelet is much higher than the SS. This may turn some people off to them. I want a TT anyway.

Gold color is out of style/fashion.
For example, plumbing trim pieces, cabinet hardware, hardware trime pieces, lamps and lighting fixtures, time pieces etc... are no longer popular in gold or brass colors. Steel/brushed nickel color is in, gold color is out.

TT models don't have that much gold. Typical used
Prices are $7kIsh is for the last produced. The msrp was only $9k and could be had at a large discount. They still sell more vs the SS models. Maybe not as popular but the resale on them isn't bad.

I think that has a LOT to do with it. The price of the TT watches needs to reflect the much higher wear and tear cost of the TT bracelet with can run over $3k. The solid gold watches suffer a lot of depreciation for the same reason;wear and tear on bracelets resulting in that high replacement cost, however, this is somewhat mitigated by the residual scrap value of a solid gold bracelet regardless of its stretch.

Someone has posted pics of both the black and bluesy TT subs wearing all SS bracelets and they look really good actually. Something I might consider doing to just change things up once in a while.

Not sure the color of cabinet hardware and lighting fixures are an indicator of the populatirty of the medal used in watches. I think gold watches and TT watches are definitely in style. Most are not real gold and are watches like Michael Kohrs etc. but I see both gold and TT watches all over the place. There is a huge trend right now to wear gold watches especially among women.

how i wish you are right about this. i've always wanted a 16613 because of the blue dial/bezel colour but sadly, the asking prices of pre-owned TT pre-ceramic are still holding and actually slowly climbing.

so for an extra little, i'm focusing on the newer ceramic 116613 instead.

some may say gold is out of style but i still prefer the TT over SS anytime. i'll worry about "stretch" a few years down the road...

I don't believe Gold will ever be out of style or fasion. It has held its own for the past several thousand's of years. My wife assures me she will keep it in style all by herself if it has to be.

I do think yellow gold goes in waves... I haven't seen a 20 or 30 something wearing a gold wedding ring in 10 years, but I'm starting to see them now, since the white gold, brushed, platinum craze has been so hot for so long that people are now going back to yellow for something different.

Not sure I'd say gold is out of style...or going out of style. I'd tend to say that the fad or the present trend has gold colored jewelry becoming more ubiquitous and is thus cheapening its current appeal and present value. Gold has and will always be one of the most versatile and valuable metals.

TT watches or gold watches may be experiencing a demand lag presently for all the reasons stated above, but I honestly believe that thru time imho, gold will retain its value better than any other metal.

I paid a premium for my TT. SS would have been cheaper, but I wanted gold.

I love gold and it looks great next to steel. Gold shines in light a way steel can not.

Trends always come back (Think of Rose-Gold). TT will be back.

I think TT Rolexes are less popular than SS because they cost more - fewer buyers means lower prices. I also think TT & YG/WG/Platty purchasers, as a population, favor the AD brand new experience, vs the more practical-minded SS set.

You can be sure the guys with TT DJs or Subs on their wrists loves the look a lot. Same thing can be said for the guys wearing all-SS. There are a lot more SS watches. Ergo - more SS guys than TT guys.

Personally thinking, to me a 2 tone Sub is no longer a tool watch and the best of the best, it's blinged out jewelry and ostentatious, like a Range Rover that's been lowered with 22" chrome rims, it's no longer fit for what it was designed for.
I buy Rolex in SS because I like it and it is functional, has timeless style.

Each to their own, if you like it, that's all that matters.

TT's are holding their value. I paid more for my TT than it was new, but because it was barely worn. If it had been banged up, then less would have been paid. Dont see them staying for sale for long either.
All Rolex watches take a dip on the used market initially. But demand and price rises drag the used prices with them eventually. Might take years though.
Agreed its no longer a tool watch, but I have plenty of those already and it's an awesome watch.

I got the SS GMT because I liked it and it was available. I got the titanium Omega Seamaster because I like titanium watches. I never thought I would get a TT, but, a Rolex TT Submariner became available and I went for it. The SS is for everyday and the TT is for special occasions. The TT has definately grown on me.

I bought my TT DJ to wear as a dress watch not for everyday use. One day I'll get my Sub but for now my Tag Aquaracers will do as my everyday watches..

It's not out of style, just more people prefer SS versions.
