Looking at Buying my First Rolex, Questions and Advice Needed

I am looking at the Ladies Datejust Stainless steel watch with the new jubilee bracelet and either black or blue jubilee diamond dial with the fluted bezel.

I looked at several Authorized dealers locally and no one had the exact watch I want. They all have similar watches, and I looked at everything.

My question...how durable is the Rolex? Especially with the gold bezel?

I have a Tag link with a stainless bezel that has unremovable dents after just two years. The Tag band is also scuffed and scratched. I have a few Seikos and the last one survived 10 years and has very little wear.

I am looking to buy a very nice watch that will withstand daily wear and I just want to make the right choice.

Any pictures of the above mentioned model, advice, opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Kaya

Hi and welcome first of all.

Can't they order the specific watch you want?

Yes, they can, but my anniversary is on the 16th, and I really wanted the watch by then. The jeweler I usually use said they can get the watch in two weeks. I went to New Orleans and looked at the other large dealer and they had everything except the specific one I wanted. They offered to order also and offered me a significant savings if I order from them.

I figured I should research everything and look at all the watches before I order...I looked at the two tone rose and plain yellow gold watches also...

It never hurts to look at as much as possible watches but if the one you mentioned is the one you really want, even if it would be a little too late for your birthday, I would wait.

I do not know if this is possible, but maybe you could inquire which ADs near you have this type through Rolex itself?

Kaya,

You cant go wrong with the Ladies DJ. It is durable and will last a lifetime.

If your heart is set on a particular dial, then by all means, get that one.. You don't want to be dissatisfied with a purchase of this magnatude..

Whichever one you choose, wear it... it wont come to any serious harm.

Here's my wifes daily DJ - 15 years old.....She never takes it off except to shower, or on occasion to change to someting with more bling for dinner or fancy function..

Heres her fancy function DJ.. WG, diamond dial, plenty of bling for anywhere.

Welcome to TRF!

Well, IMHO ladies Rolex watches are simply too small. Just my opinion.

Gent's Rolex watches look much cooler on both slim and more broad female wrists.

You might want to consider buying Tom's (our respected member here: "Kansaivet"'s) DJ which has a black diamond dial, but not the new Jubilee, but it has the WG bezel. And you cannot GET any better offer and any better seller than that.

Just my two cents!

Here you can see Tom's beautiful DJ:

DJ Diamond bezel. CLICK!

keschete, First of all welcome!

A Rolex watch, whether men's or women's is as durable as any watch can be expected to be.
Sure, over time they will collect scratches and bumps, but anything used in the course of one's activities will be subject to that.
Rolex watches can and do absorb those things as well, if not better, than most. Rolex movements are built to work in conditions that would reek havoc with lesser brands.
My wife wears the same Rolex I got her in 1977-the year we were married. In that time it's gone through the birth of three kids, fallen off more horses than I care to remember, hiked all over the country, and in general was worked over pretty good.
The head of the watch has seen the better of three bracelets.
It's been serviced when needed and shows the signs of a watch she has built quite a history with. She wants no other.

Awesome! That is the kind of thing I was looking for! And the pictures Tools posted was great.

I will go ahead and order the one I want on Monday. I drag race and road race some and I am in the the medical field, so I wanted to make sure of the durability. My Tag has actually been less durable than my Sieko and I was a bit disappointed.

Everyone seems to be saying that the Rolex is a great durable watch.

I will post some pictures when it comes in!

Welcome Kaya to the TRF. You will be pleased to know we have several ladies that post here. I can speak for my mother and my wifes Datejusts. My moms is a early 80's two tone gold and stainless steel w/gold face and diamond minute markers. IMO the most standard looking Rolex DJ out there. She recently added a diamond bezel.

My wife wears a 1980 stainless steel DJ w/white stick dial.

You just cannot kill these things. Like any mechanical watch they need regular maintenance (every 5-7 years) but it's real gold and will not fade or wear out.

My moms watch was bought at an AD new. My wifes was bought pre-owned through a grey dealer. While AD's will give you a sparkling new Rolex there are plenty of grey dealers that sell pre-owned Rolex's that might have a wider selection in dials and bracelets. Many of us have used grey dealers for excellent pre-owned Rolex's. Just stay away from Ebay and other sites like that. Use ones recomended here. You can also try the forum Timezone. There are some really good deals there as well. Very reptutable site indeed. Which ever way you go your going to love wearing Rolex. Tag's don't even hold the door open for Rolex imo. Good luck and post pictures.

P.S. Did you look at the ladies Yacht Master? or the Mens Medium Datejust? A lady here named Karis wears full sized mens Rolex and look GREAT on her.

Another question...if I want to add a diamond bezel later the AD says that if I have to send it in to Rolex, that they will confiscate the watch...is this true?

My understanding is that the RSC will confiscate 3rd party parts, not the watch.

I have seen it advised here that before sending it in you should simply replace the third party part with the original. That way, you avoid the issue.

That way you will always be sure everything gets returned
Only problem is when you want to have the after market piece cleaned or anything, as well

Hehehe, not with my husband! He wanted me to buy another car (would be #7) and he almost fainted over the watch price...

My husband sells cars and I have a 2006 Viper Coupe and a 2002 Corvette Z06...he has 4 vehicles himself..

I would love number x and could probably afford it...but...it would never pass the committee (we vote on large purchases).......hehehehehe...

Since I got a Woodchuck...my husband didn't speak to me for about 24 hours and he bought my Z06 back for me to use as a track car :)

Hehehehe...No Woodchucks allowed in the Viper....only in the Vette...hehehehe

Actually, I visited a couple times for drag racing (my former 2000 Camaro). Drove the car from Chicago, did about 30 laps, broke the trans, hung out in the bar behind the burnout box, then drove back to Chicago with only 2nd and 3rd gear.

Love the drive to the track as well. You drive like forever though the burning sugar cane fields, rolling hills, the winding path to the front gate; so tempting to gun it, then you see the huge dips and freak out thinking if doing 60 it would be very ugly.

Had some work on my Camaro done by a shop in Wisconsin who also performed lots of Viper work. Stroker kits in the V10... crazy.

EDIT: On the watch topic: I would also try on a mid-size. When I was looking for one for the spouse, the dial looked a bit cramped on the smaller model, but a very nice balance on the mid-size. Should be able to get equivalent bling on either.

You cannot go wrong with that black dial on stainless steel. Looks killer. How long will it take them to find it for you?

They said two weeks. I talked to two dealers, the first is willing to give me a discount. I am going to see what the second one says, and go with the better price.

Both are local and very reputable. I have purchased 3 watches and multiple diamonds from the one I am going to speak to tomorrow.

If you can do without the jubilee dial, you could get my like new black diamond dial DJ and save a ton of money. Bought May 2007 new from an AD.

Link to for sale thread.

I went to New Orleans yesterday and looked at over 50 watches...it is a huge AD and he offered me a large discount if I would take a two tone with rose gold and I told him no.

My heart is just set on the Jubilee Diamond Dial and the New Jubilee Bracelet and since I have small hands...I really want a woman's watch....

So thanks very much and it is a gorgeous watch, but after looking I decided to buy what I really, really want. I had to wait 2 months for the Blue Viper...and I am so happy I bought what I really wanted :)

Welcome to the forum - I'm new here, too. I think you and I are the only fans of the 26mm datejust in a world where the trend seems to be gigantic watches! I ordered a datejust, too, and expect it in any day. In part due to so many comments about the popularity of the larger size watches on women, I even went back to my jeweler two times to try on the midsize to be sure I was making the right choice. Yep, no doubt in my mind. Here's to the classics!

I for one think it's great to have the ladies opinions on a hobby or fetish that seemd to be predominantly male. Keep the posts coming ladies.

Here is my beautiful wife posing with her Rollie.

I gots to take a better pic, you can't even see the dial due to the glare.
