Strange evening at my local AD, never heard of this before

Really shocked at what happened this evening at my local AD. I purchased a SS Daytona new from one of the AD's in my city in Feb '12. White dial. Loved the watch, but wanted a little something extra.

Purchased a WG Panda racing dial off this forum and got it installed from my watchmaker who also put on the red hands ( he's an amazing watchmaker, has direct account from Rolex and got me the hands).

So back to the story. Was in my local mall this evening, had a few minutes to kill so I went into the AD store to look at GMT IIs. As I'm looking around I see a RG Daytona and ask to look at it. I commented on the weight of the watch, after taking off my SS Daytona and putting the RG one on. At the point the sales person starts looking at my watch commenting the weight was not there. ( I actually purchased it from the same store but diff location, they have 3 stores in my city).

Apparently he thought because I had a WG dial that my watch was gold. He then tells me I have a fake watch. I explain to him that I bought it from his company and had the dial put on. He starts mumbling some stuff at me and tries to confiscate the watch from me. Of course I tell him to get bent, at which point he requests I give him my watch about 5 more times. This altercation was very close to getting physical, all while an armed security guard was sitting about 10 steps away in a chair. He again brings up that my watch is a replica at which point I ask him 'who the eff are you??' , he starts screaming back at me ' who are you?, who are you? ?? '

Sorry for the rant guys, I'm just really pissed off about this. This Daytona was my first purchase, I have a Datejust my father handed down to me. I'm really a rookie when it comes to Rolex but I just do not understand why if I pay 11.2k for watch I can't do whatever the hell I want to it.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I visited Budapest last month and the AD's over there could not have been any cooler. You want dials sir? he is a whole damn box of them, we will sell you anything. I know Rolex wants to control the brand in the US or whatever, but I don't like how some AD's act as though they are police officers.

Wow! That's just craziness.

I wouldn't have let that guy put his hands on my watch in the first place.

Yes Rolex USA especially try to be more dictatorial after that experience myself would have told that person at the AD.He has lost a future customer and he can stick all the stock of watches up where the sun don't shine

What a ridiculous stance by the sales person!

I would make sure management knows of your experience with this particular issue.

I would really like to know, under what authority, that gives an AD the right to confiscate a watch. I would call up the store, ask to speak to the manager / owner, and ask them where is it written that authorises them to do that. And report back to this forum so that we may all be enlightened. If this is a new business practice of Rolex, we'd like to know!

Outrageous!

One of those times you could be tempted to use your Rolex as Bond did - as a knuckleduster.

I'm fairly certain that is not legal in either the USA or Canada. Not sure if this encounter occurred in North America but I highly doubt that an AD can confiscate another person's property.

Definitely follow this piece of advice though. Make sure you let them know that their actions were inappropriate.

I would have been furious .. The AD cant take your watch from you .. You can do whatever you like to your watch .. Rolex may not like it but who cares? .. You bought your watch, you are not renting or leasing it .. Although most people like to keep their Rolex completly factory, some people like to add little extras .. I have one Rolex in my collection that has diamonds added to the dial and bezel .. Some people dont like it but oh well .. I would call the store and complain if I were you .. dont allow this to end here

Wow, unbelievable! I can understand someone like a customs officer having a mandated legal authority, but joe citizen? Couldn't care less if he is store owner or the tea-boy.

I'd be tempted to go back (with the watch on) just to taunt him

Bad Rolex AD experience

Like he could 'keep' the watch--give me a break.

Certainly go back to the store that you purchased (or call) and explain what happened (to the manager) and see where it goes.

He was acting like he was confiscating a credit card. I would have left and come back with a cop telling the officer he was trying to steal my watch.

Totally, 100% out of line. I would let a supervisor/manager know about the experience and then never set foot in that shop again. Enjoy YOUR watch.

He wasn't inclined enough to pick up on watch modifications.

He saw the dial and thought white gold. I've never seen them next to each other in person but I've been told you can distinguish between them (SS and WG). He probably just thought it was fake because it looked like it should be WG but felt like stainless. I can see why he would think it was fake.

Not that that justifies him trying to take it from you. "Who the eff are you?" doesn't really do any thing. You know who he is. I would of taken my phone out and put the voice recorder on then simply said "So you think because you work at Rolex, it gives you the right to confiscate a watch that doesn't look right to you ?" and if he says something stupid you walk out and say "I'll be playing this to the manager later, bye"

Wow, that's kind of weird behaviour from that one sales person. I think I would be inclined to say something to their manager.

I would get the receipt and contact the police.

That person attempted to steal your watch and the receipt proves the value.

Clearly rediculous behaviour from the AD although, whilst not a lawyer, I do believe manufacturers (certainly in the UK) do have the right to confiscate fakes or replicas if they believe that's what they are. This is however very confrontational and I am surprised they would attempt to do so.

Unfortunately, this is one of the issues you will face having what is effectively now an immitation WG Daytona.........albeit still a real Rolex. Also one of the reasons I would never buy a WG Daytona as there are too many people who have just changed the dial through contacts they have in the business. But the weight and lack of arrows on the bezel will always show ........ at least to anyone that knows.

The SS version stands up for itself and so it would just annoy me to know I have a "wannabe" version of the WG Daytona.

May I ask why you swapped the dial..... just aesthetics or to look like a WG Daytona?
