Preowned Datejust - Is this a reasonable price?

Preowened 1997 or 1998 Datejust ( I dont remember)

Fluted Bezel, White, Roman, Oyster Band

$5,700

I was considering purchasing this watch from Tourneau as a wedding gift to my future husband. Does this sound reasonable?

I am little skeptical because before the dealer brought up the details of the watch he said that it was most likely a newer model, then it turned out to be a 97 or 98.

I appreciate any input, Thank you!

Seems quite expensive for a 97 or 98.

Try contacting one of the sellers here on TRF such as David SW to see what is available. Tourneau prices their pre-owned watches very high.

No, no, no....that price is way out of line, even for Tourneau

Outrageously high

By at least $2000.

If you want to buy him a DJ, get the latest body style. The current model # for the stainless steel with white gold fluted bezel is 116234. It's got a little beefier case and the bracelet has solid links. You can find a used, newer model for mid- to high-$4000s

You can tell the newer models just by looking at them. They have polished cases. The older models have brushed cases (except for the sides).

Newer model. Note the shiny, polished case

Also, on the newer model, the center links of the bracelet are polished

Older model. Note how the case and the bracelet are brushed (this is model 16200. It has the smooth, not fluted, bezel)

You can almost get a new DJ for that. It is one of the most highly discounted Rolex there is. I bought a brand new DJ for $5250 about 2 months ago.

It's not uncommon to find pre-owned Datejusts at jewelry stores priced outrageously. I guess to non-WIS's old Datejusts can look pretty much like new ones, so perhaps to some people a slight discount off of new seems reasonable (when in fact it should be close to 1/2 the price of new, probably).

If it was priced at $4,500, I'd say that's way high; $5,700 is outright bananas.

Thanks everyone. I thought it seemed quite high. The watch priced directly from Rolex was not subtantially higher (about 2K). And, I've seen similar models on overstock and bobwatches selling for almost half that, but I will only buy from a reputable / authorized dealer. Can anybody recommend someone to work with? I am in the NYC area.

If you are buying used an authorized dealer is not going to matter unless they are throwing in their own warranty. The watch will not be under warranty by Rolex.

You can check this area of the forum for information on people who sell right here. In terms of pricing, buying here is probably your best bet.

As mentioned you can get a great deal right here on TRF from a reputable seller. You won't get much (if any) of a deal from a Manhattan AD.

I've seen complete sets - box, original papers, WITH documented service histories - going for at least $2000 less on classifieds of various watch forums and the 'bay.

DavidSW had a beautiful "G" Series LNIB Datejust in the for sale section, for $4700, which is still way below retail... Here is the link:

OP, that's very high. I would go with DavidSW (even if that listing isn't what you're looking for, he may have the exact model you want).

You can't compare the new list prices with an almost decade old watch.. Dealers love it because they can say "30% off"... The market on used watches, however, doesn't really work like that..

You will pay a bit more from a dealer than an individual.. but Tourneau seems to always price their used pieces off the scale..

I would recommend that you try a different dealer..

X2. It seems to happen often were people are comparing an older different model number to a current model which has refinements over older model and taking the latest retail.

Be sort of like taking a 15 year old toyota and quoting today's improved model MSRP as comparison and saying substantial savings when not comparing apples to apples.

Without more details, this sounds high. I would think you could find DJ's for $3,500, all day.
