rolex 1570 broken center seconds pinion

Hello, I have an old 1002 oyster perpetual with a 1570 (no date), the watch is in great shape and the movement appears to be working fine, however the second hand was broken off at some point and it appears that a little piece of the center-seconds pinion broke off with the hand.

Can this repair be done relatively easily, or should i consult a professional? I will need a new seconds hand, can a pinion still be found for this movement?

Thanks

Yes second wheel pinions and hands are available out there. However unless you have the right tools and experience, this is not a DIY job.

Thanks Mike, I certainly understand. I have been building up a collection of books and tools over the last two months. so needless to say, I am still pretty new at this. If it is something a beginner could do with relatively little headache, I would like to attempt it. Any tools it requires-i have no problem buying. Its good to know that the pinions are still out there.

At an absolute minimum, you'll need

Screwdrivers
Bracelet removal tool (toothpick/paper clip, bergeon 6111, old screwdriver, etc)
Caseback tool
Tweezers
Movement holder
Cannon pinion tool (I use this for hands removal as well)
Hand setting tool (I use a press, some guys freehand it with pith wood or plastic stick)
Dial protector (I use cut up plastic freezer bags)
Rodico

Ok, I revisited this watch today. I have swapped in the new centre seconds pinion. Now I have everything buttoned up and the watch won't run. The balance wheel will rotate but slow down and stop, the seconds hand won't move a bit. It seems something is bound up, what should my next step be?

Ok so are you sure you put the correct part in if yes is it meshing with the 3rd wheel over gear if yes the spring that goes over the ss pinion is it directly over the pinion or hitting It kinda sideways causing it to bind. Next check to see that the ss hand is not too close to the minute hand and binding that way. Everything has to have the correct tolerances or it all comes to a standstill. Good luck Rikki

Rikki, thank you kindly for chiming in. I have the watch running again.

I find that the new center pinion is indeed a bit oversized it seems, it binds up the seconds driver gear.

I also think while taking the rotor off, I must have shifted the gear train. This was before I knew that the blue screws were the only ones I should be loosening. I noticed that the escape wheel did not move. I was able to get the gear train back in position and now it is running.

I got the centre pinion from ofrei, It is not original rolex. Do all the 15xx serie use the same pinion? The envelope says 1530 on it. I figure you would be the guy to ask!
