Collection Thoughts

I was looking at my collection last night and I wondered what does a complete collection consist of? Does it take one of each brand? Or perhaps one of each style? So my question TRF, what does it take to have a diversified collection?

Why do you need a diversified collection? Some people will only collect one brand, some from as many brands as possible, and others will pick specific functions to collect.
Buy what you like and don't worry about if your collection is " correct".

This isnt the stock market.... you need to buy what you like. So for me, the brand and cost (to some extent) doesnt matter. If you simply collect what catches your eye, then you will most certainly end up with an eclectic and varied group of timepieces that anyone could appreciate. My only caveat is that, to me, you are a true watch collector when you appreciate everything from a Timex to an AP. I feel that exclusively collecting one brand/model of anything, is only limiting the experiences you could have...imho. :-)

A complete collection requires one of every style from every brand. That is exaclty 745,893 watches!

A complete collection happens whenever YOU feel that your collection is complete.

My complete collection consists of a single watch.

IMO, a "collection", as opposed to a "pile", of watches needs a little bit of a theme. It can be almost anything, though. Some themes might be:

* vintage dive watches from any maker
* one of each Rolex model
* a Rolex for each decade
* 1960 chronographs, etc.

Yup. Some folks subscribe to the theme method...otherwise they claim you just have a bunch of watches.

That said, I'd like to have a bunch of watches! ;-)

One word. Balance.
Balance is according to the collector.
I used to have a wide range of brands.
I focus on Rolex & Another brand exclusively now (Although I have a few remnants of other pieces).
I used to think my collection was complete. Then I realized the journey had changed me and a new trip was set to begin :)

My Collection Circa 2010ish (Now quite different)

You have to define that for yourself. I've flipped quite a few watches over the last 20 years before I've worked out what I want in my collection.

For my personal collection, I'm going for diversity. I have a dress watch, a "daily" watch, a sports model, one I can wear in the water, etc. etc. etc.

I've seen a collection where someone had 7 different models of Sub's. It's a cool looking collection, and very impressive, just not my thing personally. And I've seen collections where the owner was going for multiple complications.

So, what kind of collection do YOU want to build?

Whatever you like. I'd be fine with a "bunch" of watches.

I don't have a collection... just a bunch of watches I like and it changes regularly.
