AT 8500, with Si Spring

Hi,

I went to a local AD and confirmed that the latest Aqua Terra 38.5mm has the Si Spring. I witnessed that on the ownership card and also by looking at the PVD balance wheel.

In tiny white letters I could just barely make out the "Si". Keep in mind that there are 2 versions of the AT 8500 with different model numbers.

If you are in the market for the AT, I would highly suggest you insist on looking at the ownership card for the symbol and matching it against the serial on the back. Finally, pull the crown to stop the balance wheel and depending on how young your eyes are (otherwise bring a loupe), you should be able to just catch the Si symbol depending on where the balance wheel positioned itself.

Current 2012 list price: $5600

It's disappointing that Omega has quietly upgraded there models.

actually, some watches' warranty card do not show Si14. I think the only way is to check the balance!!!

Why omega makes the thing difficult? Is there any problem with silicon hairspring? Any ideas?

The Silicon hairspring is, presumably, an improvement over a metal hairspring. With the looming price increase, I wasn't willing to wait for an AT with it, but many folks are. I think the reason Omega is quietly rolling out the newer SI-14 equipped ATs may be to prevent those of us, who own a pre Si-14 model, from feeling that we have an inferior product. My watch is only 2 weeks old, and my AD hasn't yet received SI-14 equipped models, except in the Golf, Annual Calendar, ladies, and olympic models.

I'm sure they will wait for the price hike before they release the Si 14 models. Like Kat I didn't wait.

Interesting! I'll have to check mine now. I know it's not on my warranty card.

I recall reading that more recent production 8500 Aqua Terra's have the Si balance spring. The only way to know is by checking for the Si 14 marking on the balance wheel. I bought my skyfall AT about a month ago and it shows the Si 14 marking on both the wheel and the pictogram card, although some watches with the Si 14 spring have been known not to have the indication on the card...so you need to check the wheel to be certain.
