comments on the new 3878
had some free time and i was able to check out the new iwc spitfire 3878
it had the ardoise dial. i thought it would be my next watch but some how i was not impressed. the slate dial was nice but i felt that it didnt suit the pilot chronograph image. they also had the 3777 the original black pilots chrono. and i thought that this is the classic and was the go to watch if i ever get the iwc pilots watch. just wanted to share. thanks! |

I can't wrap my mind around the "altimeter style" triple date window. It absolutely screams "gimmick" to me. Besides that, and the larger for no reason size, I like the 3777 more than the 3717. However, both are inferior to the 3706 (and especially the 3713) in my opinion.

I don't think the triple date window is gimmicky at all, in fact I love it. Some will hate an some will love.
I had two problems with the watch, it's too long, and the white numerals are outlined in a mirror like finish, when the light hits it just right the numbers actually appear to get larger because the edge (mirror finish) turns white and gives the illusion that the numbers are growing before you eyes. Look at the 4,5,7 and then look at the 8. The ardoise dial is spectacular and the case finishing is amazing, IWC does a great job on brushing their case. I sold mine to a fellow TRF member who is thoroughly enjoying it. |

I generally don't like triple date windows and generally don't like two register chronos. However, I thought the new Spitfire looked absolutely fantastic when I saw it in person.

Gotta give it points for style, that's for sure.
Wouldn't be my first choice but I always admire a design that goes someplace new. |

My take on the three date window is I didn't like it on the Cartier watches, but on the spitfire with the red arrow it looks amazing, it is a pilot watch. IMOH it is the best looking IWC release this year

Love everything about the watch except for the date. Lose that red arrow and have a single date window and it would be pretty close to perfect.

Seriously though, I'm really not a fan. The plain black date wheel looks particularly bad juxtaposed to the nice ardoise dial since so much of it shows through the enlarged date window. However, time marches on and I doubt IWC can support their current sales trajectory with designs like the 3713 Doppelchrono. |

I have seen the Spitfire in person a few times because I really thought it was going to be my new watch. Had a great price quote before this so I went to an AD to take a look. I am with the OP - it didn't impress me that much. The dial, while it does shine, is not as dark as the pro photos would lead you to think. It's more muted and I just didn't warm up to it the way I was expecting. It's at a big premium to the regular pilot chrono, the 3777.
To me, I liked the greater contrast of the black and white dial of the 3777. However, it lacks the in-house movement of the Spitfire, of course. Still, I think it's a better look for a pilot watch than the Spitfire. I like the date window. The thing I don't like on the 3777 is the IWC logo on the dial squeezed into one of the chrono dials.
