Hi guys, bit of advice if you would kindly oblige. So my wife-to-be has bought me my first mechanical watch, the new ceramic SMP 300 in black. I love it, and was kinda surprised in the AD when she told him to put the Bond quartz back and get the one she knew I really wanted.

The problem is it is a wedding present from her to me but the wedding is not until Nov, yet another reason to be excited. However it is to be kept in the safe until the big day, with the exception of the engagement shoot. My question relates to if I should be doing anything to keep it ok whilst it is in storage, and indeed if I should manually wind it on the day or wear it the day before.

Not sure if this whole thing is a wedding night pun, but I'll bite anyway.

I think you should use it from now. It is a durable watch. The hairline scratches that you are bound to get will not show up in wedding photos.

If the condition of the gift was that you keep it locked away til the big day, then just leave it in the safe. Nothing will happen to it from now til November.

Thank Ralphie, I sat and was mesmerised at the watch and its movement for a good couple of hours before it got put in the steel prison it now resides. But yeah I can see the whole "locked away" parallels.

Unfortunately its a condition of the gift, although I'm in agreement that I should wear it from now haha.

I would recommend winding it fully once per month until November, should keep the oils nicely distributed. Congratulations on the wedding, it's a very generous gift too!

You can wind it every once in awhile if you want to say "hi" to it but it will be absolutely fine. Not only would it be sitting unwound if it was still at the AD, but the new Omegas and Rolexes have a whole new series of lubricants that don't glom up like the days of old.
(similar to the way cars now use the synthetic lubricants). J

Sitting unwound for a few months shouldn't do any harm. If we're taking about years and years then it might be a problem.

it will be a torture to know a gorgeous watch "just" sitting in a safe. if you cant wear it outside, please play around with it indoors. wind it, pose in front of mirror with it and please my friend, take pictures, and share it here.

Taking it out and winding is not necessarily, and seeing it will only make the wait worse.

I suggest watching porn. When the wife to be objects tell her this is your way of dealing with the separation anxiety.

or you could buy a winder, set the time and date and pop it on the winder so she's ready to wear on your big day...

Thanks guys for the feedback on the watch and the wedding, much appreciated.

Its a very generous gift for sure, but something that will hopefully last a lifetime, with regular services, and be passed on to any potential children we have.

I think I will torture myself by re-visiting and winding every month.

As for the porn, been rumbled on that one already haha

And finally here is an in case pic taken before it got locked away, I'll get a wrist shot up in a day or so.

Thanks guys. I tried posting a pic earlier, but think its stuck in the moderation queue.

Gonna inflict some self-torture tomorrow and will get a wrist shot whilst I'm at it.

Have considered a winder but think I will pass until I increase my watch collection. Will be getting an Oakley Vault in the meantime however, as I fly a lot for work, and am also in the gym nearly everyday

That separation anxiety comment is gold.
