What if: New Vintage

What do guys think would happen if Rolex would ever rerelease new versions of their vintage watches with their original specs and movement? Acrylic crystal and all! Imagine the sub 5508, 5510, explorer 1016, etc... Rereleased by Rolex. Would it be a good thing? Is it just the watch or is it the search and the research for authentication of the vintage pieces what gives the value and thrill of the piece? Would it affect the value of vintage watches now? Probably never gonna happen, just curious...

If they did that it would take away all the mystique of the antique models.

Folks buy Vintage due to the thrill of the hunt and the ability to own a piece of history.

There are more reasons I'm sure.

I don't think reissues would ever happen.

Nothing would happen to the market for the original vintage pieces except maybe make it stronger as more new Rolex people are introduced to the classics. A re-release is still a re-release.

Never going to happen. At the most they'll take vintage design cues and adapt them such as the GMT hand on the 216570. Besides, Rolex already has an outlet for 'new vintage' called Tudor Heritage.

Even if they re-release the vintage models...they won't be desirable like the actual vintage pieces.
They will just be a new watch that looks and works like an old one.

Although I don't think Modern Rolex will ever go that direction I do remember posting this awhile back: http://rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=199372

Not sure if it was ever confirmed or not?

Here is exactly what will happen.... 1970 Dodge Charger versus the 2010.

Who will know the difference between my 1929 Ladies Oyster and a 2012 Vintage remake? ME ! ! ! !

Here is the Rolex version of what Dr. Linda posted above... I am glad Rolex took a different design route with the new iteration of the EXPY2

Before

After

It would probably only spark more interest I'm the vintage watches. The funny thing is, since Rolex changes their design so subtly from one generation to the next, most people probably wouldn't even notice.

You mean re-releasing old models like the orange hand EXPII last year, or the milgauss a few years prior? ;)

No, I meant re-releasing them as they were when they first came out. Correctly me if I'm wrong I think the modern Milgauss doesn't look like the vintage Milgauss. I just had the idea from how jlc did the 1931 reverso tribute (with upgraded crystal) and how speedy pros keep the original design and crystal (although the movement has been upgraded). I know it'll never happen but just curious... Although I do agree that the special part of a vintage watch is the hunt and it's history.

I can't suspend reality with that question because Rolex would never do it. Leave that to Omega.
