Mayday Mayday my sub has sunk

Just got my watch back on Monday After sending my sub to RSC Dallas to remove dust on the dial it is now taking in water. I went for a casual swim with my boy today then looked at my watch an hour later and could see water inside. Booh hooo. I can't believe Rolex did not pressure test my watch. I went down only 3 ft in the water. I made sure the crown was snug before i jumped in because I was worried about it happening and sure enough it did. What should I expect from RSC to resolve the matter. Do they need to do a full service or just dry the watch and fix the leak. The watch is under warranty and I'm shocked that this could happen from the original dust problem to a leaking watch.

They may have failed to torque down the caseback properly. You need to get that caseback removed pronto (by RSC) and into a case dryer before rust can set in. If Dallas did your work, it may be worth the 3 hour drive to have them immediately accept it as an emergency patient.

Wow, that's just incompetence. The caseback should have been torqued to 5Nm and the watch checked for water resistance before being handed over. They'll now have to service the watch completely - full strip down.

I would think my lume has been damaged for sure on the dial. Who knows what the movement looks like. Has anyone ever heard of Rolex giving a free replacement watch due to there incompetence. Im still in disbelief that this actually happened.

I've never seen Rolex replace a whole watch.

Clark: Obviously you are someone to whom we do not need to give any counseling about what you could have done wrong because you're hardened WIS...to do so would be a waste of time.

Since you said dust on the dial was the reason for service, I'm betting it's a torqued or pinched or squished, improperly seated crystal gasket/seal. FULL SERVICE or replacement of the entire watch at no cost...anything less is unacceptable.

Have you contacted RSC ?

They will most likely only replace the dial, and a complete tear down/cleaning and reassembly.
I highly doubt a new watch will be coming your way.

I agree. I could live with a complete overhaul but the dial and hands MUST be replaced. The lume could be compromised

If it was me, I would expect the RSC at the very least to provide me with a watch in full working order at no charge, whether it be your one fully repaired/serviced or a replacement. An apology from them would be good too.

I know that all people can make mistakes, but at the same time I can't help thinking that this is careless and shouldn't happen. Not that it's any consolation, but at least it's a material possession involved and not life and limb.

Good luck in getting it sorted and I'm very interested in knowing the outcome.

Well it just shows that Rolexes are more than just watches. Certainly an $13 Pulsar would hold up to a swim better than a $13,000 Rolex, but who would wear a Pulsar over a Rolex?

My first fine watch was a Omega Seamaster Pro and I got really upset when it was gaining one minute a day. I always assumed it would keep perfect time for the price I was paying. Anyway, automatic watches are an old technology, mostly made by hand. There are just too many parts handled by human hands to ensure perfection.

Not exactly what you would expect from the RSC is it. Most of us take our watches there expecting a higher level of care and competence. Sorry to read this.

I can understand how you would be upset, but I imagine this can happen to any brand. I would expect Rolex to deliver a perfect watch after this next visit. I would ask for an "extended warranty" beyond the standard time period, as a form of apology for their error. Maybe they could even include your next service free of cost. This would give you added protection for your trouble. While not likely standard practice I would expect it is within their authority.

I get into a panic every time my wife washes her hands with her Rolex on, let alone actually finding water in the dial after a swim!!!!!

Its a horror story of all horror stories this one and I can only imagine the disbelief when you saw water in the dial....

This happened to one of my Submariners as well. There was a kink in the gasket that allowed water to get into the face. My watchmaker found it and fixed. That was about 8 years ago and I've had no problems since. Good luck.
