Canada Oyster
Hi. New member here with my 2nd post.
I'd like to learn more about an Oyster signed watch. As you can see, there is no model name on the dial (unless the characteristic "Shocking Resisting" is also a model name?). The diameter is 31mm not including the crown. The movement is automatic and keeps time. The words "Oyster Patent" appear on the crown. Stamped into the back of the case has a 6-digit number (36xxxx). It looks like a 1940s vintage but that is a guess. In doing some digging I have discovered that this watch appears to have been made by Oyster Watch Co, which imported Rolex movements into Canada where they were installed into Canadian made cases with a great variety of Canadian made dials. I've found a number of explanations for this approach, but most seem to agree on avoiding steep import duties which would have to be paid on finished watches. Oyster Watch Co sold watches under a number of names in Canada, where the Rolex did not yet have the brand power it would eventually develop. I have found conflicting accounts about Oyster Watch Co being established by Rolex as a wholly owned subsidiary specifically to enter the Canadian market vs. Rolex buying Oyster Watch Co which was already an established company in Canada. Perhaps another explanation is correct. So does anyone know the model of this watch or have any additional insights to offer? Any idea what it may be worth? Thanks. |
