How much is a Z Serial GMT Pepsi Worth?
Hi all,
I have always had a thing for that Pepsi dial, and think I found a nice one for sale on another forum. Its a Z serial, b+p and recently serviced. It has desk diving scratches, but no dents etc. Looks great overall. He is asking $5,400 after some negotiation, but is this price considered a "good" deal? It is confirmed 3185 movement, if it was 3186 I would be on my way with dollar bills flying out of my pockets... I tend to flip my watches, so I do not want to get burned if I decide to sell it a couple of weeks/months. thanks in advance! |

Cannot see why the dollar bills would fly out your pocket for a 3186 its only a slightly modded 3185 nothing more. And any aluminum insert can quite easily be soursed to change insert to Pepsi, coke,or black.

Only based on the prices I see them selling for. Has nothing to do with the function of the movement. Given that I tend to flip my watches, I could have a nice investment with the 3186 at that price.

I'm looking for one of those too, so I'm familiar with it.
This price seems squarely in the range that such watches are going for. One big variable is the bezel (faded versus non-faded), although you can buy like-new ones here for about $125. If it's got a new-looking bezel, it starts to look like a better deal. That said, you're not getting a great deal such that you could quickly flip it for profit, IMHO. In the future, who knows; depends on a lot of things including what Rolex does with the new one. If ceramic bezels start sprouting Pesi colors, then prices of aluminum pepsi's may fall. |

I am not looking to profit if/when I flip a watch. I just do not want to lose money by paying more than market value.
I am just curious if this is the ball park of what these watches are selling for now or if the guy is giving me a bloated price. I do not see many of them for sale on this forum, so it could be possible that other owners are hanging onto their "classic" |

Having been watching this model for some time, I'd have to say I've seen quite a few here, though, although that may be just because I'm focusing on it. I keep gravitating between a GMT Pepsi and a 16613 TT bluesy for my next watch, although I can't buy either until I get some financial stuff sorted out....killing me to sit on the sidelines. |

At that price you won't get burned but you won't make much profit,if any. As others have stated that is in the price range of a used GMT II Pepsi Z serial #. Ironically, i had been looking at the exact same watch and the prices about a week ago because my AD here had one that he bought back from a customer who needed cash. I found the prices to be in the 4900-6300 range but there were different circumstances throughout that range like condition, papers, boxes, tags, warranty etc.
But from reading these forums i think the most important thing is what EVERYONE says: Buy the seller first, then buy the watch. |

Thanks to all. The seller checks out and has some references on another forum. Seems like a fair deal, lets just hope I keep this one because the GMTs are getting harder to find due to people looking to hold theirs.
I am going to try and strike a deal and let you guys know. The seller is about 25-30 miles so I might take a drive this Sunday. |

I think $5000-$5500 is a fair price for one in like new shape and with all the original goodies. I would never pay a penny more for one with 3186 stamped on the movement, it is all internet hype and sellers taking advantage of less informed buyers. Before you know it all GMT's will be coming back from service with all the little changes that the 3186 has, so why pay a premium for one now?

There are Rolex watches out there that were made in far more numbers than the old GMT 3186's and they now command a far bigger premium over the more common models. And I know you WOULD pay a 'penny' more. Seems the more 'informed buyers' are setting the prices for everything we buy today.

I'd suggest trying to find the best gmt II. Don't worry about bezel colour as that is easily and relatively cheaply changed. I've got all three inserts for my GMTII yet I've never tried anything other than pepsi. Nice to have the set though.

If it's the classic, and it moves you, then I would buy it. Although, I would try to whittle down the price a bit. I have the classic/3186/z series, and would never part with it (a hard-earned gift). But, as a buyer, you really hold the cards in regards to a negotiable price. Good luck!
