From USA to Australia... My new Rolex

Hey Guys,

I had a post earlier about wanting to buy a SubC and thanks to the kind folks at TRF I happily did some research on some sellers and Rob (aka Perpetuator) just happened to have a BNIB SubC waiting for me

Due to the strong exchange of the AUD to the USD I decided that my next Rolex will be a import! After a few emails which then resulted in a few phone calls, I settled on the watch and the seller. The next step was to wire the funds..

I went to the bank first to wire funds, but luckily I asked what exchange rate they were offering? They answer me that it was 1.00AUD=0.99USD but the actual exchange rate at the time was 1.00AUD=1.03USD, this was on top of the $35 transfer fee they were going to charge.

After realising that I could be short of a few hundred bucks, I gladly went to the nearest foreign exchange agent (UAX exchange ). The exchange agent charged $15 for the transfer and charged my rate at 1.00AUD=1.027USD which was fair imho.

Lucky for me Rob is a very patient man because the exchange place wanted alot of bank information which Rob was happy to chase up and provide for me. It took the funds about 48hours to clear (I wired on the Friday and cleared on the Saturday). During that time my package was sealed like a air tight vacuum.

Rob sent out the watch on the Saturday or Sunday and I received my package 5 days later on Friday thanks to USPS tracking service. I would recommend all Aussie buyers to use USPS tracking service because the package has to be signed by someone every time it arrives at a new destination.

All in all, importing from USA is scary at first thought but in the end the product you get is no different than walking into a AD and paying $9000 for something that would cost $7150 online

I would absolutely not hesitate to buy a watch again from the forums because we really are dealing with like minded people and gentlemen, who do what they say.

I love my new watch!!!

I would strongly recommend an exchange agent, because why get ripped off a few hundred bucks??? I could buy a bottle of blue label AND have enough change for a Cohiba or two from the money saved! Think wise gentlemen!

loving the AUDUSD at the moment

I had no hesitation wiring my money over to the US as I used a trusted seller, they pretty much have done these transactions hundreds of times and know the routine pretty well

btw thread useless without pics

Thanks for the post!

This is a +1 for the TRF trusted sellers here, and a +1 for anyone not in the US contemplating the leap of faith required to send large amounts of money to someone in another country that you've never met.

James...you didn't mention if you had to pay customs duty ,GST and clearing charges. Could you please let us know what the total charges including post were. That way we here in Australia can work out how much it will cost us to do the same as you have done. Did the watch come direct to your address via USPS or did it have to go through Customs and did they then advise you the watch was here.? Lots of questions but your post was a little short on detail.
thanks

From what I've learnt from my time here, don't even bother asking

Just trust the seller to be able to "help" you out with customs and if you use a trusted seller you won't have anything to be worried about?

Best way is to look in the For Sale forum, find the one that you are looking for, and PM the Seller who will be more than happy to answer all your questions to your satisfaction. Many many deals have been done with members in Australia (and all over the world) to their utmost satisfaction. Ok, I'm just in the process of performing my first purchase from a US based TRF seller and I am totally comfortable with the entire process.

Awesome James.

I used PayPal for a similar USA deal, but their exchange rate was terrible.

So... What stops a random someone who has no intention of buying to ask the same question to one of the sellers and reveal it publicly.

Surely most of the customs knows every tricks in the book?

Congrats James, enjoy the sub.

Rolex, scotch and cigars...seems I have a twin out there!

Next time you could also use XE.com it takes a couple of days to setup, but you can do it all online (account setup, bpay, eft to seller), no fees and x-rate conversion is very good also.

Aussie banks are such a rip of on fees and xrate.
