Winders

I just bought a brand new 16610LV about a month ago. I absolutely love it! I have an Omega ss Seamaster and a Breitling as well but I now have severe Rolex fever much to my poor wife's shagrin! I have seen a couple of discussions on the board about winders but I wanted to ask some opinions from those of you that certainly know more about luxury watches than I do.

I've heard varying degrees of opinions as to the harm you can do do to one of these watches by putting it in certain winders. Can anybody give me a little guidance as to what you should and shouldn't do regarding them? I like the idea of a winder as I tend to switch my watches less when I know I have to go through the trouble of re-setting it each time I wear it.

Any opinions greatly appreciated!

I have two winders and love them. They are a great convenience.

On the other hand, there will be someone come along shortly to say winders will cause a watch to wear out faster than normal and that winding/re-setting a watch is all part of the fun.

Kind of a personal decision.

IMHO, watch winders are more of a convenience than a necessity.

If you would have a very complicated watch like a Patek Philippe or IWC perpetual calendar, a watch winder comes in handy so that you do not have to adjust the whole calendar if the watch has stopped.

But for a Rolex where you would only have to adjust the date, I do not believe you need a watch winder. So I would just let it stop and give it a full 40 windings before wearing it again.

A long term "rest" of the watch would definately NOT harm the watch! Modern watch lubrication oils are synthetic and would not dry out like the oils used in older watches.

When you are wearing your watch, the parts are actually being exposed to WEAR AND TEAR. And if you are keeping the watch constantly moving on a watch winder, this means even MORE wear and tear.

Therefore a watch winder has no positive effect on the watch whatsoever, but is a mere practical device to keep it going.

Thanks for the reply! Does the quality of winder have much of a bearing on whether or not it harms the watch or keeps it wound?

All the winder does is turn the watch; it does not matter if it is a cheap or expensive winder. Mine were $46 each and are mostly plastic.

I doubt it.

The two brands I see mentioned most often are Orbita and Wolf. To hear them tell it, winders are good for your watches.

For top of the line, pull out your wallet and head for Scatola del Tempo.

The Orbita Road Show was in town yesterday. I got a good deal on an Orbita Sparta Two-Watch Winder.

That was a big concern!

I've looked at and actually owned a very expensive quad watch winder. It didn't even keep the watches wound properly! I sent it back. I just bought a cheap one exactly like your describing. It will probably get the job done!

Thanks!
