GMT Master or Sub Date

I'm trying to decide on which one of these to purchase "new". What are the advantages of one over the other? I would take it from watching this forum that there are far more Sub's sold than GMT's ?? By that I would likely guess that when it comes to re-sale, the GMT would likely be a better investment. Your opinions will be appreciated. The GMT I'm looking at is model # 116710 LN and the Sub is model 116610 LN.

If you take a 116710 from which you remove one hand and one (usefull) functionality , and finally add it some US$ , you get a 116610 .

So with little brainstorming , go for the GMT2. Cheaper and better ....

Both watches look pretty similar from a distance as both the dials are black and the ceramic bezels are black. The GMT is more usefull for everyday usage as it gives two exta time zones but the SubC is a dive watch so it depends where your priorities are. The GMT is slightly cheaper which may sway your decision. I like GMT's because they do more things for me but i do prefer the red hand over the green. Its a win win here as they are both great watches so you should try them both on really. You may find that the Glidelock on the Sub sways it. All this by the way from someone who has a TT Blue SubC 116613LB.

Consider the differences before you make your decisions:

GMT: polished center links, GMT function, ez-link clasp, bezel function tells 2nd/3rd time zones

Sub: brushed center links, glidelock clasp, bezel acts as a timer

I'd go with the GMT because I like the extra timezone function. However, I do prefer the glidlock clasp and brushed links of the sub. You can't go wrong w/ either. I suggest going to an AD multiple times to try them on and figure out which one appeals to you more. Don't rush into your decision, take your time so you choose the right one. In the end, they both will hold their value well and are priced similar so if you choose one now and want to switch to the other one later you can do it at a pretty even trade.

The GMT is pretty much in a class of its own when it comes to its competitors - in my opinion, it is as close as you can get to the perfect all-situation luxury watch, I love the functionality of it, and I think it has taken the GMT range in a new and interesting direction. This is what modern Rolex is all about, utility meets innovation meets elegance

The nicest thing I can say about the Sub is that the clasp is excellent (albeit overshadowed by the more extensive version of Glidelock on the Deepsea and the marvellously engineered clasp on its little brother the Tudor Pelagos), and the bezel action feels nice. However, I think it lacks the elegance and single mindedness of Subs of days gone by, and I think there are superior alternatives out there outside of Rolex. I think Rolex missed a trick here, they could have created something truly special, and instead, they went for a safe option that will undoubtedly sell thousands, but will never be remembered as a great watch

Very similar watches in looks and price. The deciding factors are probably the glidelock clasp and brushed center links in the Sub, vs the PCL's and second timezone function of the GMT. My preference? GMT as I like the PCL's, and also because I find the glidelock clasp a fraction too thick compared to the GMT.

I use the bezel a lot for keepng track of time. With the sub, it only goes counter clockwise. The GMT goes in both directions making it quicker to set. On the other hand, I have really gotten to like the blue dial on the sub. Whatever you decide, you will be happy

I don't know, it's funny, people talk about GMT owners and say, they should have got a Sub. I like the GMT C better than the Sub C, but I like the older Sub better than the older
GMT. If you get ceramic, go for the GMT. If you don't want ceramic, get a Sea Dweller :)

There is no real investment decision to make here.. The Sub is always in demand and always brings top dollar.

As to which to get, don't you think that you should look at their functions and decide which one you would use, functionally, more than the other..

I've got a Sub, but I don't dive. I've got a GMT, but I don't use the second timezone function. The only functions that I need are the time and the date lol!

I got the Sub-C because I thought the bezel on the GMT was too busy and I didn't care for the PCL's.

The GMT is more versatile - I'd go with that.

I agree to a certain extent Larry but let's not forget that a lot of people buy divers' watches and models with GMT hands without using the functions on them, they just happen to like the watch they wear very much!

Having said that, Doug, I will say that I do not believe in buying watches as investments and do not consider the re-sale value an important factor when shopping for a watch. If you dive or travel frequently then the choice should be a no-brainer, otherwise I'd recommend you to try both at an AD and see which one you prefer to see on your wrist!

P.S.: I prefer the GMT myself.

I thought the same thing about the bezel on the IIc. I love the watch but for my only one for everyday wear, it's too busy. The PCL's aren't an issue. I would have brushed them. I went with the Sub C also

I used to love the SubC...that is until I walked into an AD and tried the GMT Master II.
I like the bezel of the GMT-II more but I don't need the 24 hour hand.

Try both on and see which one you like more.

You'll never go wrong w/ either one. They are the 2 most popular Rolex sports watch. If it was me though I will choose the GMTiic for functionality, versatility & overall wrist presence..

+1. Additionally, I don't like the cyclops, so I ended up with the 114060.
