Demanding a new watch from AD
Hi again everyone,
So I have pretty much decided on a Day/Date II in YG and I want the little diamonds for hour markers. So I see the "regular" DD II at the dealer and I tell him I want the model with the diamonds. To which he says " no problem.. I order and switch for you". To which I say " No.. I want a NEW one made like I want at the factory. ". Too much to ask ? A 34k purchase.. I don't want a watch I know has been handled/worn by hundreds of people in the display case, now being opened up and switched around. I just wanted to make sure you guys didnt think I was being unreasonable. Rgds, Shawn |

Hi Shawn,
If you're willing to wait (Rolex Canada may not have the exact watch you want in stock), then it shouldn't be a problem. I also wouldn't expect to get as good a deal on one ordered fresh from the factory vs. one kept in stock at the AD Chris |

You may have to wait a while for a new one from the factory and No its not unreasonable.

I don't think you're being unreasonable. You have every right to request one with the dial from the factory, specially at that price point.

No way. Why would that even come up? At any Rolex price if I am paying for new, it must be new. In the display fine, but a dial switch...uh uhh.
EDIT: So what did he say?

With all due respect I don't see the problem with switching dials (especially since you are asking for a specific one) and I do not see how the fact that people tried the watch at an AD makes it less new. After all, they had it on their wrist for a minute or two maximum and it never left the store, I personally don't think a watch that had such a treatment can be considered used.
EDIT: Indeed, if you are willing to wait for a watch coming straight from the factory it is up to you, let's just say I still do not think this watch you saw can be considered not new.

I wouldnt consider it used, BUT when you are paying that amount to get the most luxurious Rolex model you expect the best of service and goods. Even if it takes that effort to make YOUR PIECE
Looking forward to the incoming Shawn |

I wouldnt call it unreasonable at all. You want what you want and when spending for the price of a Rolex you are entitled to it, especially at the DD level. A dial switch would be a big no because it didn't come that way from the factory. I think ordering one shouludn't be that big of a deal. I have to imagine they are pretty readily available from Rolex.

I wouldnt let them switch the dials if that is what you meant.
I think they may have meant they will switch the actual watch? Meaning they will get another one from one of their AD's? If that was the case, I wouldnt mind, but switching the dials on the same watch, no way. |

It's not unreasonable and shouldn't be a problem for the AD to call RUSA. Odds are, they can have one in a matter of weeks.
When buying new, I would prefer that watch I want to be exactly how I want it from the factory |

i understand the emotional point, sure, but, there's no telling the movement that comes "fresh" from the factory is realy all that much newer than the one you'd get from the AD with a switched dial. also, who knows what will happen at rolex, but, they might just do the same move with a watch in stock as far as switching dials. last, the amount of time you lose while waiting for a "factory fresh" model is time you won't have wearing it and there probably will be another price increase, too.
anyway, personal choice rules here and you have to be 100% satisfied. good luck with the hunt! |

I don't see the issue. Many times a dealer will switch the dial on DJs because there are a 100 variations. It's the same watch model and wouldn't be "used". It's still a new watch. That said you are purchasing it and you should be 100% happy but it could take a while to get the exact one in stock. ADs swapping dials isn't a rare event.
Just because you think you are getting a "freshly put together" watch from Rolex might not be true. All gold watches with diamonds can sit around for years. Even if directly coming from Rolex and not another store the watch could've been assembled many many months earlier. It doesn't change the fact that the watch is NEW. Still you must be happy. I dial switch doesn't matter because it is a factory option on the same watch. |

It's your money and therefore, you should be able to get exactly what you want. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion.....

Wouldn't the info on the card be different if they swapped dials?

The AD I deal with would gladly accept your money, your business and your request - with a nice discount on a YG piece.

It isn't uncommon to have a brand new watch scratched at AD's shop when someone put it on his/her wrist to try it. In such case the watch is polished and later is sold as new.
I wouldn't like to be the buyer of such a watch. When I go to an AD to buy a new watch it have to be really new, in my opinion. Else I would have looked for an used watch. Dial swap in that situation isn't an option for me too. Its not unreasonable at all. |

Even when i buy a watch at a grey dealer I request only freshly new and have never had anything but..
If that can be managed grey then an AD should not be a problem

even a few people trying an all gold watch, how careful they may think they are being, will s scratch it because the material is so soft..thats why requesting new is a must in my book..

Fair enough, it's your right to request a brand new never been handled watch. Any AD will honor that request. However, be prepared that the level of discount may be less as the AD may have based the price on the fact that the watch in stock has been there for a while, or was bought before the price increases in June. It's normal business practice to want to sell existing stock before ordering new stock. If the requested dial is a not a popular selling dial, then be prepared for a bit of a wait if there isn't one sitting at the distributors.

I see the OP's point.
In my opinion, I would one that was assembled ONCE, at the factory, not something they had to take apart and reassemble. I feel the same way about cars, don't like dealer add-on options. |

I'd go for the BNIB, too.
It's your $34k. You should get exactly what you want, exactly the way you want it.

I think it's reasonable, even if the watch didn't cost so much.
AD's don't want to do this is because they want to sell their current stock before ordering more. Not everyday, does someone walk into their store and buy a DDII. |

If every buyer that walks into an AD asks for a brand new never been touched watch, they'd never sell any of their stock!. Thankfully, the huge majority of buyers are not that fastidious! Just TRF'ers!
