Old Model "Brand New" Watches

All,

New guy here. I'm wondering how non-AD sellers (even the most reputable ones) can secure older watches (say 2006) that are "brand new," i.e full warranty, never purchased by anyone? I understand that Rolex is very strict with their dealers, so I'm wondering how so many older-model "brand new" watches are for sale on the net.

Don't get me wrong, I'm ready to buy one, and I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. But one of my hobbies is to study markets, and this one really intrigues me.

Thanks!

Very simple really. There are people who buy watches and never wear them. They sit in a safe for future use or trade. Sometimes for a nice profit, sometimes not. Then there are watches that languish in a dealer's case for years. Sometimes it happens, and they wind up in the hands of these sellers, or again collectors.

No mystery really. It is interesting how some models will sit and sit, but that's how it is.

The safest place for your watch is on your wrist.

Thanks BP,

And I assume that, as long as the warranty card isn't signed, the original warranty is honored by Rolex?

If it comes directly from an AD, then no question. However if it's coming from a grey dealer then I would assume it matters whether the card bears an AD's name (but doesn't have a purchaser/date listed), though part of me wonders whether Rolex would call the original dealer to verify the purchase if you showed up with a decade-old watch that stated it had just been sold (in order to verify that the card wasn't a forgery). I don't know what happens if you show up for service with a completely blank card...

Lets say I bring my watch in for it's first 5 year old service.
Does my watch need to be accompanied by the warranty card??

No..
The warranty card is never needed unless you are requesting warranty work..

Welcome to TRF!

As you seek your NOS Rolex, be sure you have a trusted seller on the other side of the deal. Those here are very careful to delineate between LNIB vs. BNIB.

I do recommend posting a WTB item in the Classifieds when you've met your minimum to post there (be a member for over 16 days and make 16 proper posts). This can help you find a good deal quickly. You can always check the Who's Who section to see the names of very trusted sellers here, too.

Chrono24 is also a good place to find NOS discontinued models, I saw an Explorer 114270 advertised from a seller in Italy.

I was in the hunt for a NOS GMT Pepsi and advised DAVIDSW who found me one. Mine is a true original Pepsi, a 16710B (I believe the coke is 16710C) Z serial number (2006). Although sitting unused all those years, it keeps perfect time and is one of my favs from my Rolex collection. Broadcast in the WTB post, and one of the trusted sellers will likely find you one. Expect to pay a premium - NOS and mint Pepsi and Cokes are HOT!!
