What the h*** have they done!

That was my reaction wean I looked at my Datejust wean I got home.

I just purchased a used G-serial Rolex Datejust about two weeks ago. Wean I received it I looked at it for some minutes and everything looked good. Then I took it to my AD to have the dial changed. After 15 days they were done chaining the dial. I took it home and opened the bag to look at it. To my big surprise the date numbers that was black wean I gave it to them were now red.

I was about to call them to ask why the h*** had they also changed the date wheel from black to red!?

But for some reason I figured first I will just change the date and see if they are all red, and to my surprise they were not. Every other date number is black and the other half is red.

I did not know this, and my questions now is. Does all new datejusts come with every other date black and the other half red? Also do anyone know if an AD would change the date wheel to an all black one, even though it is not the standard for my watch? Does anyone also know why half of the dates are red and the other half black? What is the point?

Edited: First I did think the AD did change the date wheel from black to red. But now I do think the roulette date was already on the watch. But I did not know about it. because the seller did not mention this and on the photos the date was black, and wean I received the watch the date was also randomly on a black date day. So I did never see or know it had a roulette date. It was first wean I got it back from my AD that I did see it had a red date because today is a red date, tomorrow it will be black again.

Here it is with the red date showing.

Perhaps that combination is correct for that particular dial its called a roulette date wheel. And it was used on many vintage watches in the past, and is now quite sort after in the vintage world myself like it.

You got a Roulette wheel for some reason. That looks like a Tapestry Dial too....is this a new option again or is that an older dial?

Seems odd to me they gave you that wheel, but personally I love it. I know some modern DJs have it, but I don't know which ones. You don't like the Roulette wheel?

Do you mean the date change color on consecutive dates or do you mean the you have 1-31 in black for 31 day months and 1-30 in RED for 30 day months?

Here's a past thread on the roulette date wheel:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=107905

Personally, I wouldn't be happy about the AD changing it without my prior approval. I wonder though -- since you say you took it in shortly after receiving it, is there a chance it was on an even date (so black) during that time and that it came with this date wheel but you just never noticed the red odd dates?

No expert here but I believe that roulette (alternating black and red numbers) is common on many new Datejusts but the chance of getting one is random.

I'm guessing you had that date wheel all along but may not have seen the date change before you had the AD swap the dial?

Yes the tapestry dial is old, and that is the dial I wanted to have placed on the watch. That was the reason I gave it to them in the first place.

I do not think they gave me the roulette date. I think it was already on the watch, but I did not know about it because the seller did not mention this. I am not sure if I like it or not. I am glad it is a roulette date and not a all red one. I will have to try it out for some days and see if I like the normal black over the reds. Maybe I will like the fact that it every day will look a little different then the day before.

But thanks for all the information.

Correct! That is what I think too. What do you mean by random? So it is not possible to order an Datejust with roulette date from an AD? Rolex just sends them out randomly so your lucky/unlucky if you get one?

Well like I stated in my post whatever the dial was before the roulette wheel was correct for that watch before your dial change.

Yes that is probably right. I just got a little surprised because, the seller did not mention anything about red date numbers, and the photos only showed black.

I placed the dial it originally came with on my old Datejust. Here it is.

The reason I changed the dials was because I love the tapestry dial, so I change it to what ever is my current SS/WG Datejust.

I guess I should. I must say the red date already starts to grow on me. I have to use it for some days or weeks and see how I like the roulette.

I'm also a fan of roulette dates -- and of that dial. Great looking DJ! If you decide you don't like the roulette date you'll just have to get another watch to wear on odd days.

I also like the red date on most of the TOG's. Especially those with blue dial and red second hand.

But I did never know the roulette date did exist until now. I always thought it was the choice between black date wheels or red date wheels. But the roulette brings the best from both worlds I guess.

What AD would install a totally different date wheel without asking/telling the customer and then on top of that don't even charge for it?

I like the roulette wheel very much. You received a nice surprise.

I was a little confused at first because the tapestry dial didn't match the rest of the watch (engraved rehaut, lumed hands, roulette date wheel) but now I understand.
