Is this normal?
So I picked up an AP Diver yesterday and love it - but there is one thing slightly bothering me...
When I start to screw down the crown - it almost feels (and sounds) as though it is screwing against a spring. This happens all the way during the screwing process pretty much. This is in contrast to my Sub which made no noise at all and felt extremely smooth when screwing down. I believe the watch is fully wound when I am screwing it down - and it is only the 3 o clock crown that does this and not the 10 o clock. Can someone tell me if this is normal or not? The watch is brand new BTW :) |

My new ROC has a very fine and smooth clicking sensation when I wind/screw the crown. I suppose the sensation could be described as feeling like it's "screwing against a spring."

Hi, you will get a bit of a grating sound when you wind the crown in. As long as you watch is genuine nothing to worry about. Chill.

Thanks for you reply - can you just confirm the clicking is when you are actually screwing down the crown as opposed to when you are winding it (obviously it does click when it is winding).
It feels weird to me - especially compared to my old Submariner - but so long as everyone's does it then it looks like I have nothing to worry about! Thanks! |

Perfectly normal and yes the Rolex movement has a totally different feel I agree. You have a two year warranty with a new AP and another year if you register your watch, so enjoy it and congratulations an a great AP diver purchase.

It just felt like it had been over wound somehow and like it might be causing damage - so had me a bit worried! |

So can anyone actually explain why there is a grating/clicking when you screw down the crown?
If someone knows I would be interested to know the mechanics/reason behind it! |

It is certainly more a clicking than a grating the more I think about it. It feels as though the clicking is "against the grain" if that makes any sense? It is also louder then the clicking when you wind the watch.
Just not really sure what would be clicking when the crown is being screwed down as surely everything is disengaged at that point (i.e. the winding mechanism)? It also seems a bit odd it is just the 3 o clock crown that seems to do it and not the 10 o clock crown that rotates the internal bezel. |

No joke. If you have an AP Boutique nearby, I would go compare it to others, or at the least compare it to a few at the AD. I was going to do that when it first started happening, but I thought it was all in my head. I won't make that mistake again... |

Then it started to have a "clicking" feel while screwing it back in, which I thought was odd because I didn't remember it having a "clicking" feel when screwing it back in previously. I thought I remembered it screwing in pretty smoothly with just normal resistance and not a "clicking" resistance. Then, a few winds and time settings later, the time changed while screwing it back in, and when I tried to pull the crown out so I could try to screw it in again the crown/rod came out completely. It can't hurt to wait until you are near the AP dealer and check it out then. I just wouldn't put it under water at all in the meantime... |

I have just done it a few more times and think it may my OCD taking over.
It is a very fine clicking as referred to by cdnyc81 at the top of the thread. I just think I notice it much more because my Rolex is totally silent. I think I'm worrying about nothing - and as others have said - I have a 3 year warranty if anything does go wrong. Next time I am near the AD I will pop in and double check but I think everythings OK! |

My AP does the same thing when screwing down the crown. Definitely a different feel in comparison to my Deep Sea

I think its perfectly normal. My ROO Diver seems to keep the winding spring engaged when you tighten the crown vs. my rolex that seems to disengage when you tighten the crown.

This is why the clicking is probably ever so slightly louder once it is fully wound and I screw down the crown. Right - can really start enjoying it now! Will put up a photo later today or tomorrow! |
