You see a starving child on the brink of death.

The vulture sees its possible next meal, with no guarantees that there will be another, although surely there will be.

To you, the child's predicament is more important than the vulture's next meal.

To nature, it is meaningless.

To quote Peter Weiss from his play "Marat/Sade," nature is a "...passionless spectator...." An "...unbreakable iceberg face that can bare everything."

"Every death, even the cruelest death, drowns in the total indifference of nature."

it happens because people who can stop it do nothing to put an end to it.

I've not clicked the link but it's hardly difficult to guess the heartbreaking story/pictures that await.

You ask a loaded question that has no single simplistic answer. Therein lies politics, ethics and religion.

Very sad, such is life and nature. That picture is very powerful, the message is clear, only the strong survive and the fortunate.

I would't go so far as to say it is meaningless. I think perhaps the ultimate meaning is elusive and/or beyond our comprehension. Everything is nature, and there is a movement towards higher levels of biological and mental organization. I find it hard to believe there is no meaning at all behind it.

Ultimately, we will tend to project our own individual beliefs onto it. Meaning or no meaning, it is beyond the scope of our mental faculties to grasp.

Well Paul, please don't. It's one of those things you'll wish you could un-see.

I shouldn't have, but I did.
