Crown malfunctioning on GMT Master II
I have a ~5 year old GMT Master II 116713LN that has developed a problem with the crown. I pulled the crown out today all the way to reset the watch for our exit from DST, set it, and pushed it back in. I could tell something didn't feel right as it went back in. It's always been a little quirky, as all crowns are, and has its own "feel" -- and now it's different.
Initially I couldn't even get it to pull out all the way again. I can get it to the wind point, and if I tinker within I can get it to the hour-hand set point, and then tinkering some more I can sometimes get it to the time-set point, but ... it's not consistent. I'm thinking I just bought myself a trip to the watchmaker, but curious about any opinions here before I make that trip. I'm a troubleshooter by nature, and while I certainly don't trust myself to open this thing up with any expectation of success, I'm curious if there's anything I *can* do without opening it. Should I let it wind all the way down and then try? This sound like something anyone has seen before? Thank you! -Dave |

What happens is the intermediate setting wheel is binding on the calendar quick set gear mounted on the setting gear cover. When you pull out the stem the setting wheel slides into the gear if they are not lubed properly the teeth won't slide off eachother and into place so you can't get into setting mode. Try rotating the crown as you pull it into setting position it might help to line up the gears, but more than likely it needs to be serviced and properly lubricated. Rikki

Not only does that make perfect sense, but it works, too. Always helps to now what's going on behind the curtain. Thank you for that!! One last question (and I know there are no crystal balls and I'll take full responsibility for my own actions): in your opinion is service urgent on this, or am I safe waiting a little bit for sending/taking it in? I have some travel coming up and I love this watch when I do because of its ease in traversing time zones. :) Again, thank you so much! |

You're probably good for a year or 2 but don't push it to far. The parts involved are not expensive but if they break they will take the gears around them with it.. Rikki
