"INVESTMENT" threads ...

How do you feel about them.
I HATE them a lot. Watches are for fun and it's sad that some of us 'use' them as an investment.

Worse, some of those nice watches (mostly those who are hard to get or those who are limited) end up in safes. Some of us prefer to keep them unworn because they think it's an investment.
To sad when a real watch enthusiast can't get e certain watch because some speculators bought them

I wear all my watches, a different one everyday. It's a lot of fun. And no, I do not consider my watches as investments.

My watch was bought to be worn, and not as an investment.
It saddens me when people covet these objects for financial gain and not as the fantastic timepeices they are.

I don't mind about those threads, but I don't buy watches myself out of investment reasons.

I don't have a problem with someone buying a watch hoping that it will appreciate. I just don't think (in most cases) you make a very good return on your investment.

My watches are not bought to sit in a safe. I have way too many guns and knives taking up that space

Wear them and Enjoy

All the watches I own I wear, with a couple exceptions that are limited edition pieces. I don't buy watches for investment, but I do like to read those investment threads to see others inputs on the matter.

We should not forbid them. This isn't Stalin's Russia.

Doesn't bother me. If you don't like the subject matter of the thread, then move on.

IMHO, real WIS's don't consider watches as investments. They are meant to be worn and usually an interesting part of any heirloom.

I definitely agree - "It's a watch wear it."

But to answer the question of how I feel about investment threads, IMHO, this forum is the perfect place for the topic of "Rolex as investment". While I may not agree with the intent of buying a watch to squirrel away for it's future cash value, I do appreciate that there is a great place to ask and have so many enthusiasts chime in.

Well, I said I don't care. Having said that, to be honest while I've never really bought a watch with an eye to investment, there does come a time when an evaluation has to be made.

The hard reality is that certain pieces HAVE appreciated to a point where some question wearing them in all conditions. I have a few that I'm VERY conservative with. At current levels I'd have a hard time replacing them...if I could find them.

Well said..

Buy a recent model, wear it, watch it, take care of it and at some point it may be worth much more than you paid for it..

Buy a vintage with an eye for what you intend to do with it...Don't buy a hard to find, costly collectible piece, and then trash it by wearing it in all conditions.....it does a disservice to the watch and other collectors..

The reality is, a Rolex watch becomes an investment commodity the moment you buy it, like it or not, you don't have to see it as such though. I buy my watches firstly because they talk to me, they don't say a lot, it's just that smouldering sexy look (rather like when you first spotted the gall that you couldn't live without ), which you just gota have.
Regarding investment threads, why not, if that's what some people see them as, then so be it, and of course, it's always nice to know that you can flip it later to buy a different model with the proceeds and in some cases even end up with some change , not many things you can do that with these days. I dont think too many on here will be doing that though, these guys just take far too long to find, last thing I want to do is get rid of them.

Well, if you think of your watch as an "investment" then you are down about 20% the second you put it on as it goes from BNIB to "used". Not a great way to invest, instantly down 20 or so %.

I bought my GMT-Master to wear every day and that's what I do! The fact that it probably won't lose a lot in value is nice but doesn't bother me one bit as I have no intention of selling it. The next owner will be my son and he only gets it once I'm dead and buried, which I hope won't be for a good while. As he's not very excited by watches I don't expect my mushrooms to be poisoned any day soon!

I have a Rolex-owning uncle who keeps his watch in his safe virtually all year round, wearing it only on "special occasions". I really fail to see the point of this. He's nearly 80, does very little all day, yet still won't enjoy wearing the watch on his wrist.

Buying any item as an investment is, to me, never a good idea! A lot of house-buyers in the UK are about to find that out!

Some investment threads contain intelligent information and good ideas, as well as very good questions. Others just bore me. I'm sitting on the fence this time, I'll keep reading them as they roll out. Never too late to learn!

I think that if someone buys watches for investments, they should have every right to. Plus, I would like for them to share that experience with us all(or at least me).

Whether anyone buys a Rolex for investment purpose or normally, it is a fact that Rolexes have been at the top in terms of liquidity

I tend to buy Rolex for me and not for future sales. I have flipped several Rolex watches in the past as I wanted different Rolex watches. I do not mind if people buy/talk about buying Rolex for an investment. I have five mint condition Joe Montana rookie football cards I could sell four of the five and buy a very nice Rolex. Like anything else you have to find someone who wants to pay what the cards are truly worth, this is the hard aspect of selling anything. Finding that buyer who will pay you what you want. This is why I don't see Rolex as an investment. Most all of the time you will not get what you paid for the watch in the first place, and very rarely will you make money on a Rolex. IMHO

I would read any investment thread b/c i'm interested. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make more $, buy more pieces, and post pics on this forum.

Keeping a watch in a safe for many years, especially a mechanical one will dry out and congeal the lubricating oils in the movement. Several years back I bought a Bulova self wind watch that was part of a jeweler estate, it was in a safe for many years, it ran for less than a week before the main spring broke.
