Rolex Service

I have been away for a while and now am back for advice. My IIC is 5 years old and may be ready for service. Today I went to a local watchmaker that advertises "Rolex quality service at a substantially lower price". He quoted me $575 plus parts with an 8 week turnaround. I said I'm not sure that is any cheaper then sending it back to Rolex. His response was "you can't send it to Rolex, only an authorized dealer can and Rolex will charge for service and replace your hands, that's mandatory, they always require it"
Now I have been away from here for a bit but still recognized that he was giving me BS.
Can someone please give me the current "skinny" on factory service, price, time, requirements as well as reputable alternatives?

Thanks

Marc

For that price get REAL Rolex service not "rolex quality" service.
Even for a little more....don't....

I take it he isn't an authorized service center or it wouldn't just be "rolex quality" or rolex type overhaul....IT'D be a Rolex Service.

This is my local Rolex service center...they turn them around in 2 weeks.

I'm still sending to Rolex proper....

So is this watchmaker accurate that only an AD can ship a watch to Rolex?

Basic Rolex service is 550 last time I have heard plus cost of parts if needed. They will recommend the moon to you but you can reject it.

You should send the watch to Rolex because:

1.) You want factory trained watchmakers doing the service
2.) You are 1000% sure that if they do replace parts that its 1000% Genuine Rolex Parts.
3.) You want the 2 year warranty on the service.

There are lots of legit places to get Rolex serviced. you should ask if they will back their work for 2 years. Look for reviews of the watchmakers. Four Crowns is one of the reputable service guys for Rolex in Los Angeles. all of the watch makers there were former Rolex watch makers who started their own service center after Rolex Beverly Hills closed for renovation. ABC watchwerks is another...

I was thinking a non RSCservice of just lube and tune up etc. should cost around $350. I don't need or want the polishing. Is that unrealistic?

Can I send directly to RSC and will they insist on changing the hands (which are perfect)

Polish or not I don't want a "lube and tune up". I hate the fact that that expression is even used. "LUBE AND TUNE UP"?? That's what I've gotten on some watches I've bought over the years when the seller told me it had been "serviced".

I don't want some guy to open up the back and drop some oil in it and "adjust the timing" and say it was serviced.

I WANT a Rolex overhaul where the watch has been broken down to the smallest part and screw and where each of them are looked at to see if they are worn and/or need to be replaced.

The worst part for me about buying used watches is just this...everyone's "overhaul" or "service" is NOT created equal...well unless they sent it to Rolex.

Also quality of service can also be more serious than after 3 weeks its losing 25 seconds a day...
There is a post within the last month about a forum member who had his watch overhaul locally for like 1k...the first time, FIRST TIME he dove it leaked and ruined his watch. Last we heard he was fighting with the guy....if this happened w/ a watch newly serviced at a Rolex service center...there would be no "fighting" there would only apologies and Rolex fixing it.

Agreed. There are a couple of guys that have proven themselves to the forum a hundred times over and who WON'T do an "EXPRESS LUBE" on your Rolex.

The RCS will not change your hands for no reason. The guy is full of it. You can send it to Rolex your self. Just call first and find out how you should ship

Before

After

Just sent a watch to Rsc NYC myself. They recommend sending registered mail, so you have to cover every seam of the package with paper tape. The post office will let you use their brown paper tape. Just include your contact info and make sure not to use any regular tape on the package. Good luck!

Although if you don't need rsc papers I'd just send it to Rik! =)

Sometimes they'll even send you a kit to ship your watch to them. I use the Dallas RSC. Anywhere else besides RSC and you could end up being sorry.

They don't automatically require you to change hands on the watch. That is just a ludicrous statement. You do not have to have them polish the watch but I don't believe they will knock anything off the bill if you don't (you could check on this). I was recently quoted $600 plus parts for RSC service. So $575 + parts is no bargain. I have a local guy who is an ACWI CMW21 certified master watchmaker and certified Rolex watchmaker with a Rolex parts account and iirc he charges $450.

The RSC service is not just a "re-lube". They completely disassemble the movement, clean all the internal parts, crystal & case, then reassemble and lube the movement.

That line about Rolex replacing the hands as mandatory is complete BS. Run, not walk away from this person. You can call up a Rolex service center yourself and send the watch in yourself for a service. Last year my sub cost me 600 plus parts and tax (just over 700) for the service. That line about only an AD can send it in is also a load of Bull.

Ps: turn around time was about 4 weeks. Add time of course if you need to ship.. I live close enough to NYC I dropped off / picked up my watch.

Unbelievable the load of bull this guy fed you.. Wow, what a liar! That really ticks me off..

would you buy a ferrari and take it too a backstreet mechanic for a service?
or would you protect your assets and take it to either main dealer or a garage many people can recommend after actually taking there ferraris to?

same scenario with different objects.....

There is a Rolex Service Center in Lititz, Pa. You can always send your watch to RSC directly - call them, they will send you packaging materials (you must ship USPS Registered Mail)

They will never change the hands unless you agree to pay for it up-front You can also stipulate that you do not want the case/bracelet refinished, but that is always free with the service.

No, you cannot get just a lube and tune-up for $350.

The Rolex Center in Lititz is closed to the public. Only Rolex or an AD can send a watch there.

I have walked my watch into the Beverly Hills RSC directly, and have also directly mailed my watch to the Dallas RSC.

The hands on my watch were never changed. The crown, yes. That might be close to "automatic" (but not certain).

The price seems high...I would go with the RSC.
