Not sure how the others feel but I say better safe than sorry.... so every now and again you mid-identify one as fake... all the ones that you did get right would have been reported and some unassuming person would have not gotten robbed....

Depends on the end result of the false ID, which could get ugly as it plays out. "Better safe than sorry" should mean that you play it safe and refrain from reporting until you're sure. That way, nobody gets hurt by accident.

I like the way the OP here brought it up when he wasn't sure, as a possibility, not a certainty. When you report with certainty and end up being wrong, you should lose some credibility. Again, how you can say you're playing it safe to misidentify rather than wait to be sure is beyond me. That's risky business in my book.

Fair enough.. However, If you are 90 percent sure why not have vetted in a section called "watch out" by people who may be more in the know as opposed to just letting it go? Just title the thread "possible fake"

I'm no expert, but I've come to trust the judgement of several experts here, and I value their word. In a couple of recent reports, these experts have sent you backpedaling, which should indicate that while you may have zeal to do the right thing, you're making too many mistakes. Until I'm sure, I defer. That's my motto. YMMV.

I did indeed make the mistake of not sourcing two photos. I am also no expert and lots of fakes get by me i'm sure.. My thought is, i would get the easy ones to save someone else the exercise of posting the thread. Sometimes it's difficult to tell because of pic quality or other factors (like the photo is obviously from an advertisement).
Am constantly trying to learn how to identify these fakes and/or scams. I also have huge respect for the experts here and I know who they are. Thanks for the input

I'm rooting for you, and it seems the scams are increasing, so having more people watching out is a good thing.

I know there are lots of scumbags out there, but there have been instances where decent folks have just made a mistake in a listing, or someone here makes a mistake in identifying a problem. Either way, the intentions were good, but going in with the idea that behind every problem auction or sale there's a scam could lead to some difficulty in retracting unnecessary or false accusations. In the time I've been here, I've seen some interesting cases with lots of gray area that don't always pan out as it seemed they would. Not everything is black and white. It's not a witch hunt, just a process of establishing authenticity the best we can.

You seem like one of the good guys, so I don’t wish to dissuade you in any way. You’ve got talent, and like I said I'm rooting for you, and like you, I'm only trying to help.

Understood Bruce, I never took your input for anything other than genuine concern for doing the right thing. I agree 100 percent with everything you just said. In addition, I have been messaged by one the experts on some tips regarding all these matters... Thanks for your help

I am glad I sparkled a constructive discussion.

I am trying to gain knowledge myself and before posting in this section I have tested myself many times. What I am trying to say is that I agree that one has not to throw accusations lightly but at the same time, as Tablia wrote, the "watch out" section is here to ask the community what they think about a timepiece and in case one has some reasonable doubts I think it is better to post (not to report) than not to do it.

Of course, good manners are a non-negotiable prerequisite... I have seen many posts in this section getting a "bat" twist...

I'm still learning too but one thing that seems to be common among the fakes, or at least the really bad fakes is the date window and cyclops.

That is the first thing I notice. When looking at a true Rolex the date window should nearly fill the entire cyclops and the date window when viewed though the cyclops will appear to be twice the size as the circle markers. This one clearly shows the date window very small through the cyclops.

Also, it can be tough to tell if the watch is at any angle but if looked at straight the date window should be perfectly centered in the cyclops. So many of the fakes have the date window really off center.

If identification mistakes are made, most of them will be filtered by our residence experts and corrected on this post. I would not worry about an identification mistake on this post as there is really no harm done. There are no links from Ebay or Craigslist to the WatchOut!!! posts (there should be!!!), so all mistakes remain internal. We will all learn from our errors and it will just make us all the better.
