Sub $100 more than GMT at my local AD

Good Day Folks,

Hope you're all doing well. I've paid a few visits to my local Rolex AD, because I've been thinking about purchasing a Sub, or GMT II and noticed there's a $100 sticker price difference between the two.

I was under the impression that the GMT complication would add to the cost. Can anyone elaborate on the difference?

What one would you buy? Just curious.

Cheers and have a good day.

The sub has always been more expensive that the GMT its perfectly logical,as the subs sell far more in volume than the GMT.And today basically all the watches except the chronographs are all based on the cal 3135 with or without added complications. And I would buy the watch that I wanted to buy just try both the one that smiles back the most that's the one to buy.

padi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried them both on my wrist and will admit that the Sub sang a higher tune than the GMT; also, it was easier to read the dial on the Sub.

Cheers,

If you are looking at the Sub-C, then the glide lock bracelet in itself is worth the money....I would definitely pick Sub-C over GMT II for the glide lock....but that's me

Both models I tried were the latest from Rolex, so I assume it's the Sub-C (ceramic)?

Sub c is also water proof to 1000 ft, that may add to the cost?

My preference lies with the GMT IIc. It is however difficult to ignore the "singing."

I would buy the one you liked more. When I was faced with this choice I went with a Pepsi GMT2. Now that the GMT2 has PCLs and a black insert, I'd pick the Sub FWIW.

Isn't that Sub's clasp a bit more costly on its own?

That's the reason IMHO

Thanks for all the answers....makes sense!

Once I find the right deal/seller; I've decided on the Sub!

Looking forward to being a part of the club; I've owned LOTS of watches, but never a Rolex to call my own (took some in on trades and flipped them before I could even look)

Thanks and have a good day!

At the time when I bought my first GMT II in 1985, the GMT was more expensive than a Submariner Date

if its a toss up then the glidelock should seal the deal.

Save the $100 - that money will go a long way to funding your next purchase.

Before I got my SubC, I was deciding between the SubC and GMTIIC as well.
They both sang to me but in the end I got the Sub. GMTIIC TT or YG comes next!

I ended up with the SubC as well because the salesman at the AD couldn't show me how to work the GMT. He had no idea how to set the 24 hour hand and told me it couldn't be set separately from the 12 hour hand...so I went with the SubC.

I ended up getting a GMT a few years later and like it more.

The list is prob higher because of the glide-lock clasp. The GMT just has the "easy link" extension that flips out 1/2 link size.

Sounds like you made your decision so I won't complicate it with my preference

But ...if you went GMT, I'd recommend brushing the center links

I went in ready to buy the Sub(or even a Daytona) but the GMT
sang to me. Three years later, it still does.

There is no wrong answer.

Get the one the sings to you.

Both have their place, and don't worry about the $100 either way. Sure the glidelock is nice, but the SS GMT is (IMO) near perfect. Picking just one, well that's a true dilemma!

I was going back and forth between the two (August 2012). The price difference then was $550. Picked the sub, bec. of what others here already mentioned: glidelock, Triplock (GMT is a twinlock) and I didn't like the finish on the bracelet. Had the gmt had the same bracelet as the sub, I would have bought the gmt.

Well not in my 1985/6 price list brochure its lists GMT Master 16750 £834 and £871 with Jubilee. The 16760 GMT11 £998 and with Jubilee £1010 the 16800 Submariner £1012 and a bargain the 6263/5 Daytona £882.

It's supply and demand, the way prices are always set, not that the Sub can go deeper or has a fancier clasp..

The Sub Date has almost always been more expensive than the GMT (there are a few years exception), and the Explorer II with the same movement has always been less than the GMT..

(The GMT went ceramic first, so the price jumped, but it was only a matter of time and when the Sub went ceramic too, the planets re-aligned and all was back to normal and right with the world..)

The ceramic GMT has a triplock.

GMT seems complicated at first but you will easily learn. I would buy the GMTc and pay me a dinner with the extra $100. Cheers!

Have checked the german 1984 pricelist:

Submariner 16800: DM 2.650,--
GMT 16760: DM 2.775,--

Strangely, it has been pretty often like that here - GMT was always a bit more expensive than the Sub.
