Tag or Omega???

Looking for this years Merry X-Mas to me watch and have got it down to 2. Either a Tag Carrera or a Omega Speedmaster pro. I can get a much better deal on the Tags but I'm trying not to let that be the deciding factor. What do you you all think.

Tags are nice... They have a bit of a following..

I just think the Omega outclasses it and the Speedy Pro is an icon among chronos..

I have both and would say go with the Omega, they are better watches IMO.

Some things to consider:

Depending upon the model, some Speedmasters are manual wind watches whereas all of the Carreras are automatics.
Omegas generally hold their value better than Tags, however both depreciate faster than Rolex.
My most accurate watch ever is an Omega(Coaxial PO +0.8 secs/day), the Tags I own are less so.
I have never used Omega service, however Tag service had my 2001 model Link for more than 4 months and I only got it back then because I called the AD and raised hell.

You might want to look for a pre-owned example of each, you can save a ton of money that way even for NIB examples, that way you can buy both.

Omega without a doubt. I've always preferred their designs.

Until one week ago, I always kinda liked the Speedy Pro, but I never thought it looked awesome. I was wrong though, because I saw one for real recently and this watch looks fantastic! Probably the most classic/timeless design by Omega.

Thanks for all your help. I think if I can find a decent used Omega I might buy both. Like I said before my Tag dealer has awsome prices so I may be able to afford both. Any Idea what I might pay for a decent used Speedmaster PRO? And wear would be the best place to look for one

If I had to choose a brand, Omega. If I had to choose a particular watch it would be and is the Tag Heuer Monaco.

I am not sure if I am breaking any rules by posting these, but apologize if I am. Look in the classified section at:

Prices are going to be all over the map, but make sure you ask for and check references before parting with any money.

Go with the Omega. I have an old 6000 series Tag and an Omega Speedmaster DD and the detail on the Speed is unreal.

A family members Christmas Tag experience, 2 years ago. He wanted a tag chrono for years so his wife finally got it for him. Within one week--no kidding---one of the smaller dials ceased to function. they were both sick. It took all of the joy out of the watch.

He now wears a Rolex GMT II.

From a recent convert, definitely an Omega. I am just amassed at the quality and accuracy on mine (it gains less than half a second a day, just incredible accuracy for a mechanical watch!)

I wouldn't hesitate to go with Omega--the Speedmaster pro is a classic.
I've owned a few TAGs, and they are nice but no Speedmaster.

Similar to Rolex sport models, the vintage Speedie Pros are creeping up in price and you can likely find the latest version used or new for less than an older model. I've been after an older (late 60s early 70s vintage) model with the Lemania 861 and they have been in the 2,000-3,000 US range. I've seen preowned recent models (1861 mvmt I believe) for well under 2K on a regular basis. New or old, you just can't go wrong with the Speedmaster.

Matt,

I own a Tag. If I was in your shoes I'd buy both. They are both great watches. For example a Tag Carrera with leather band would look quite at home on your wrist if you're wearing a suit. A very unobtrusive looking watch. One should not allow the wrist watch to take over from the overall impact of a good looking suit.

The Omega would be great as a general purpose watch that would be quite at home with jeans and the like.

Hey, this is only my opinion though. Others on this forum may beg to differ.

Tag makes some very nice watches and the Carrera line is one of their best but the Speedy I think is a step above.
