Jaeger LeCoultre versus Panerai

What do you all think is a better, more desirable, valuable brand: Jaeger LeCoultre or Panerai?

I know different models within each line vary in desirability, but just curious what people's general sentiments are. Thx.

Just from a N00b point of view, since I just started my interest in these beautiful timepieces, it's what you like, not what is more valuable. There are some Panerais that I really like, but my personal aesthetic is more satisfied by the JLCs for their smooth form factor and elegant lines. But then, they're more of a dress watch, and seem much more delicate than a Panerai. It's very much what you are going to do with it, like the difference between a Sub and a Day-Date.

I love both brands, so tough to choose. I might pick a PAM over most of the JLC sport models but would love something from the JLC Master Control line (like the SIHH 2013 Master Calendar) or an ultra thin Reverso.

Sums up my feelings. And since I don't "dress up" my 116231 MOP is more than adequate for as formal as I get.

Love them both but JLC encompasses a much wider range of styles. My JLC (MUT RDM) is a rather formal piece so I wear it when it is appropriate.

I love strapping on the 111 casually. It gets a lot of wear in my rotation - much more frequently than the JLC.

That has nothing to do with brand desirability though.

I agree on this as well, for something dressy I much prefer the JLC like the reverso. That is on my wish lish.

Trying to figure out if I should get a JLC Master Compressor 2 or a Panerai Luminor Marina 40mm model with date. Would love an exhibition back but seems like those are mostly on the 44mm models. Would hate to buy something that doesn't have much secondary market demand. Already took a beating in January on a Planet Ocean Chrono.

Have you tried many 44mm Pams? I think you may ultimately regret a 40mm.

If you are thinking resale, I would really look at the 44mm PAM and JLC on the 2ndary market..the 44mm will have better demand later on..

And that's the problem with Panerai. 40 millimeter models can take a hit, though not too bad, on resale. The Panerai is a great look, but in terms of movement, I don't think there's any comparison. JLC is practically all in house, and their movements appear in Pateks, AP, VC, and all the highest level brands. That said, I think Panerai is a fun watch, and I owned a 40 millimeter. I only sold it for the chance to get a Breguet. I looked at a 40 millimeter Panerai on bracelet last week, and a bracelet really gave it a larger look. I have also owned a JL C compressor GMT. Both are great Watches. Get the 1 you like, and don't worry about the other stuff.

I'd prefer a 44mm Luminor over the JLC Master Compressor. I'd probably pass on the 40mm PAM, having owned a PAM 48 for years (before my wife claimed it).

I prefer PAM Luminor 44mm manual winding (111) and Radiomir 45mm auto chrono (288) than any JLC.
Reasons: personallity, versability and simplicity on design

40mm PAM 241 on bracelet on 7" wrist. Definitely looks larger with bracelet, certainly has heft...

Unlike Michael Vick, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I'd get what you want to wear. Buying what has best resale value is buying with the idea of selling. I don't understand that.

OH..don't get me wrong...JLC is SO MUCH MORE WATCH..and movements and all..but it just not well recognized here in the US market...

and yes..buy what you like...not what the market dictates...

JLCs can take a beating on resale, and you can occasionally get up to about 25% discounts on new JLCs, even from an authorized dealer, so you should shop around in either case. I love my JLC Grande Reverso Duo, but it's certainly quite a dressy piece.

I think Panerais are generally more casual, everyday kind of watches, although something simple from the JLC Master Control line could be a good watch to wear to work if you're generally in a suit or business casual attire.

As for the size of Panerais, I have a 6.75" wrist, and I'm not generally a fan of big watches, but I think the 44mm Panerais are quite wearable even on a small wrist like mine, due to their extremely compact lugs. To me, it doesn't make sense to purchase a 40mm Panerai, if a 44mm is too big, then get a watch from another brand instead.

Owning both brands, I clearly have no preference, voting with my wallet.

If you don't want to take a beating in the used market, then buy used to begin with, the heat of the new sale price will be worn by the first owner.

The Panerai is worn more on a day to day basis, as the current JLC is a Reverso, more suited to the occasion of going out.

The PAM is a #141, at 42mm, smaller than is commonly preferred. Has a highly regarded Zenith movement, up there with the JLC. They only made 500 of them 11 years ago, so you won't be likely to see one in the wild or even at a Paneristi gathering.

Both brands are owned by Richemont.

cheers,
richard

Well, you are asking on a Panerai forum...

To start with, both brands are owned/managed by Richemond Group, so they are big into selling strategies like re-issue older models, artificial patina lume, various limited editions etc.

Historically speaking, JLC is a far more "prestigious" brand with more innovation and advanced complications. But in reality that doesn't mean anything, what matters is which model sings to you and you want to spend your hard earned money on.

I have a lot of respect for both brands, but I always end up finding other models from other brands to actually keep either a JLC or Panerai in the collection for any length of time, maybe it is just my dislike for Richemond Group...

I don't think any of those have the best resale value (as it has been stated above already) but to be honest I don't really think about that when I buy my watches. If you ask my humble opinion I usually prefer JLC in general and especially their dressier models, however, in this situation the Panerai has the advantage of being only 40mm (as opposed to the 41mm - 44mm JLC's of the sporty line). The choice is rather difficult but because I know that watches that are bigger than 40mm are too big for me I'd go with the PAM in this particular situation.

I haven't, but with my 6 3/4" wrist, I am pretty sure I can't pull off a 44mm. I tried a PAM310 (40mm) tonight and it was love at first site. Jonsing for one in a major way.

Perfect for some 44mm Luminors. Honestly - the 111 wears similarly to my 15300. Definitely bigger than a Daytona.

My wrist is also 6.75 so not humongous by any stretch.

I own 7 Panerai's at the moment, and down to 2 JLC's, however I will say that Jaeger leCoultre is 10x more watch per dollar, in comparison to Panerai.

Different strokes for different folks, which is obvious. JLC is just supreme, movement wise, craftsmanship, fit and finish. IMO, there isn't much of a comparison at every level, JLC is better except resale !

There's a reason why a JLC is a " watchmakers watch" .. I own both.. While they are on a different level in everyway, JLC is by far a superior brand...

Second thought after trying on a 44mm PAM 88 and 104. I determined that the Eta movement 44mm watches wear smaller than the in-house models. Therefore, I am deciding between:

44mm (Eta movements)
PAM 88
PAM 104
PAM 164

42mm
PAM 392 (if I decide to go with a smaller in-house movement)

Will be trying again and buying on Tuesday/Wednesday of this week. Woo-hoo! Thanks to all who talked me off the 40mm cliff.
