Age old question for newbie rolex wannabe - GMT II C or Milgauss GV

Sorry, boys n gals(if any) but this aged old question must be asked for myself...although there are similar threads...... For my 40th later In the year I'm planning on trading in my Brietling Superocean 44 for a Rolex... I've prob narrowed down(not 100%) to the GMT II C or the Milgauss GV.... It will be a wear for work (suit & tie), as well as lounging around at home, out for beers, meals etc...
Love the cool of the GV, but like the sporty of the GMT....
Opinions welcome....

Of the two, I prefer the GMTIIc. Otherwise, it would be a Sub.

GMT2C, I love that watch.

GMT. Has a date. 2nd time zone. More functional day/night. Milgauss is cool but a little more on the sport side. Still OK with a suit but I believe the GMT is more transional.

GMT over GV IMHO.

As for GMT vs Sub, the sub is not superior, just more popular. Take your time and go to some ADs and try on everything. Never know what might just feel right. Good luck with the decision and welcome to TRF!

Two totally different vibes, both rugged enough to handle your plans for them. I don't know if I agree with the comments that the Milgauss is more sport, in fact it's basically quite the opposite. It's a funky Datejust without the date: smooth bezel, stick dial, no crown guards, PCLs, no fliplock. The only thing that makes the GMTIIC dressy is its PCLs.

Are you a traveler, frequent flier, pilot? Do you work in a laboratory, medical/engineering field? If neither really fits the spirit of your career or hobbies then it's entirely up to your sense of aesthetic. Both are great watches. If this is your first and only Rolex go GMTIIC.

Great advice chaps thanks.... its purely an aesthetic thing.... I'm hoping its not my 1st watch... I plan to get one every 5/10 yrs if finances permit...it would be good if the AD's didn't have such bright "bling bling" lighting though.... It's the 1 and only time it will be under such complimentary lighting and creates a false impression....still it's my only option...

Try them on until you're comfortable with which one you want the most. However, I think the GMT-II C would be great first pick up.

I am the odd one out here. I prefer the Miguass GV. This watch is the only watch that doesn't look like a Rolex and quite fun to look at. It looks really great with shirt and tie!
Depends whether you really need a watch that can display two time zone. If one like a shiny ceramic bezel, I prefer the current Sub. The 24 hour marker on the GMT 11 makes it looks a touch busy at a glance.

Just a thought, it might make sense to see what happens as Basel first. I don't think the Milgauss is changing any time soon however there are always the persistent rumors that the GMTIIC lineup might include new bezel combinations. In truth, no one knows except Rolex but if you want a little perspective, it might be smart to wait and see if there are any changes in the sports lineup.

If you currently wear a SuperOcean 44, I think you will like the wrist presence of the GMT. Granted it's only 40mm, but it wears bigger IMO. Try them on and see what you think.

I've (almost) just been through your dilemma--in my case choosing between a Sub and the Milgauss GV. After a couple of weeks of reading through the forum, haunting TRF, and visiting ADs, I purchased the Sub.

Having a TT Datejust and Cellini, I was looking primarily for a sports watch, also wearable to work. In truth, both would have served my purposes. There clearly isn't generally as much affection on the forum for the Milgauss as there is for the GMT or Sub: with the Milgauss often perceived as a little silly (it's the second hand.) There is no question I was swayed a bit by this perspective. But I've got to tell you, I can't say for sure I made the right choice.

I find the Milgauss GV an enormously fun watch alternative. It will get a very different response than the GMT, and as Ravager suggests, it is not really a sports watch (though obviously a great casual watch) and I think, in many ways, it is also less showy than the GMT or Sub. And, as Herbie mentions, it dresses up very well (So does the Sub and, I suppose, the GMT). I came away feeling comfortable that I had purchased a classic, exceptionally attractive, sports watch with the Sub, but missing the fun of the green crystal, orange and black dial, and the lightning bolt.

I'm assuming you've tried both on. I would recommend trying on the Sub as well. (Close call between the Sub and GMT for me: for reasons listed all over the forum.) Try all three.

My recommendations are to follow Ravager's advice and try to see which one fits who you are and what you want it for. I think it might also serve to wait until after Basel--though there's word, or rumors, of a price increase soon--to see if something happens with the GMT. Finally, if you can, don't pay attention to those who wouldn't have the GV: just different expectations about what a watch should be and do. It's a unique, and to my taste, very cool watch. I know I'm going to kick myself the first time I see someone outside of a dealer's wearing one. I'm betting I end up picking one up sooner rather than later.

GMT or Sub as your first. The Milgauss is more of a fun watch and might be overshadowed by Omega's wave of upcoming anti-magnetic movements (capable of withstanding 15,000 Gauss) moving main stream in the next 2-3yrs.

My opinion would be the GMT but you should really try both on and maybe a Sub also and see what makes your heart race. You'll know it once you see the right one on your wrist! Good luck and welcome to TRF, great bunch here!
