Daytona sec/timer hand.

Is it ok to let it run all the time?

Yes it is.
I like running it all the time, but others don't see the point.
my understanding is it will do no harm in running it, although it will reduce the power reserve by a few hours.

Half the fun of owning a mechanical / automatic watch is watching the mesmerizing second hand glide around. Chronographs take away from that - to an extent.

Honestly, I don't let mine run....just a personal opinion.

Folks. If you don't need a chronograph don't buy one.
Some of us know they are a tool not a toy. Told that by an AD back in the 70s.

You can run it all the time unless it has the Zenith movement.

Respectfully, I'm gonna have to disagree. Just as you don't need to be a diver to own a sub...but who amongst us can resist the pure awesomeness of the sub. Heck, I bet there are even daytona owners who don't even know what the numbers on the tachymeter mean...but if they like the watch and can afford it, I'm good.

OP: no worries. Let it run if that's what you like. Don't let us spoil your fun.

I wouldn't but just bc I worry about the wear. However Padi, a mechanical expert whose opinion I respect, said it should not cause premature wear.

You can let it run if you like. I don’t but I understand those who do.

This from the Daytona brochure.

4130 CHRONOGRAPH MOVEMENT
Inside the elegantly designed exterior, the
Cosmograph Daytona is a masterpiece of
watch making art. The 4130 chronograph
calibre movement was conceived and
assembled exclusively by Rolex in 2000 for
the Cosmograph Daytona and incorporates
just 290 components – far fewer than a
standard chronograph – making it a much
admired symphony of simplicity. It has
a 72-hour Power reserve (66 hours if the
stopwatch is in use)
and, inside, the blue
Parachrom hairspring, made from a unique
alloy impervious to magnetic fields, gives it
up to 10 times more resistance to shocks
than conventional hairsprings.

The only people that would run the chronograph all the time are the ones that don't need/use one IMO.

I've often wondered if people ever use the chronograph function as a second time zone (...start timing at midnight for whichever time zone your visiting).

If you are not timing, the less movement on the watch the better.

Last edited by ~JJ; 26 March 2013 at 11:12 AM.. Reason: Sorry, in context of if its safe to continuously run the chronograph.

Why not but a GMT? It would be cheaper for that purpose.
