Another new member with new watch

Hello fellow members.. Just today I was given my late grandfathers oyster DJ.. He wore it every day and it was pretty filthy, just finished cleaning it with a toothbrush and mild soap water mix.. I do have a question as to the sapphire crystal.. It has a few surface scratches on the dome, can this be buffed out by a AD.. Or would the crystal need to be replaced? I don't have much info on the watch except its stainless steel with a fluted bezel and champagne back, with the jubilee band..my father bought it as a gift for my grandfather back in the mid 90's and it was used then.. I believe it to be an 80's model.

If the crystal is domed, then it is acrylic. Sapphire ones are flat.

Acrylic can be polished by you using Polywatch compound if you're careful. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhQ1QuA4oSs

Some minor scratches on sapphire can be done but much different using a diamond paste and best left to the professional watchmakers...

Welcome!

I walked into a large Rolex AD in NYC. The service tech polished the scratched acrylic crystal on my older Date model for free. It took her less than 5 minutes to polish.

Welcome to the forum! Congrats!! If your grandfather's watch was pretty dirty on the outside that could be a sign that it was used with pleasure and, perhaps, not too clean on the inside. Just a thought, but you might consider giving it an expense-paid trip to the spa (a qualified watchmaker) - they can save the acrylic if its not badly damaged, and may preserve the movement, as well - an important step in your enjoying it for many years - and - passing it along to your offspring (?).

Was told by my dad it was a champagne back, looks to be more of a bronze/ brown back .. Ill try to figure out how to post pics as its on my iPhone, not sure how to copy the URL for the pictures to put on here.. Pretty sure it's the sapphire crystal . It's not really domed too much.. Looks to be flat with a small slight dome

Also how do you tell what model number it is.. On the band clasp it has a few numbers that I can see.. One set looks to have been done by a jeweler or Rolex themselves

I plan on doing that this summer.. Having a good checkup.. As you all know how that goes for.. But it's worth it for this grail piece.. I own a victorinox Swiss officers watch in SS too , I wear that quite a bit as well.. I've owned that 20 some years now

Welcome to TRF, great bunch here. It would help a lot if you can post some good pictures of your watch.

To find the model # you need to remove the band at the 12 o'clock position. The serial # is at 6:00...

Took it to an AD today to have the face buffed of scratches.. Was told the band is pretty worn and stretched, it's an early 80's model with an somewhat rare dial color..

Welcome to the forum Jason, and big congrats on your DJ.

The crystal looks like acrylic. Like the others mentioned, a good watchmaker will be able to polish the crystal easily and fast.

I also recommend a service to make sure about the water resistance and the condition of the movement.

Wear it in the best of health . . .

Capt. Serdal
