Hello everybody! I was turned to this site by another member from a mutual forum (martinloganowners) and I just wanted to stop by and say hello!

I'm looking to get a nice watch in a few months and have always been intrigued by Rolex. I've looked at several other brands such as Breitling, Omega, TAG, Baume, Cartier... but for some reason I always end up gravitating back to a few select Rolexes.

This is for a graduation present to me (from my lovely parents) and I wanted to make the right decision so I'm doing a lot of legwork ahead of time to make sure I make the most informed decision.

Anyway, I was looking at several of the Rolexes:
1. Submariner (w/o date)
2. Sea Dweller
3. GMT-II (classic in black)
4. GMT-IIC (in black, but I have not yet seen this in person)
5. Explorer II (white face)

I ruled out the Pepsi GMT, but I really like that look... though I just don't think it goes well with a suit. Not sure though...

I'm looking for your guys' opinions as to which of the 5 are the most desireable in the Rolex world and why. I've read that the Explorer II isn't as good a seller here in the US as it is in Europe.

Also, would it bode well for me to buy an old-stock GMT II Classic? Or am I better off saving up for the GMT IIC?

Are there new models up in the horizon within the next 2 months that I should watch out for (no pun intended) and how does this affect the value of the prior models?

Hello and welcome! They are all nice watches. My opinion is to go to an authorized dealer (AD) and compare the models side by side and see which one you like.

Read the various watch reviews written by the members of this forum.

I always thought that my first Rolex would be a Submariner Date, but after reading reviews on this forum and then going to several AD and comparing some models side by side.... I ended up with a GMT II "c"

My favorite Rolex is the white dial Explorer II. If I buy another Rolex it would probably be the TT blue sub. I like the subs better with the date than without.

So what MLs do you have? I have a pair of the SL3s in my listening room / study.

Martin Logan Summits in my dorm-room/apt. Nice to see a fellow Loganite here!

As for my faves so far... I have to say I've ranked the Explorer II a little low on my list and the GMT-IIC up top. However, the price for the GMT-IIC is prohibitive and so the Subs are what's next in line. If I could still find the GMT II in all black, that would be right up there with the black Subs.

If I get the Sub without the date, does it not hold its value as well as the Sub w/ dates?

I believe the sub with date does hold its value better. On the other had you might be able to get a good deal on a used sub without date. I like the GMT IIc also. For me the Sea Dweller is just a little big for everyday wear. Also I have heard that the Sea Dweller cost more to repair.

If it were me, I would go with the SD all the way. Good luck and happy shopping to you.
I have had my SD as my daily use Rolex it has been in fire, water, cold weather, and mud.
You can not hurt a SD. The Sub is the most common Rolex around the SD is harder to find.
Buy a Rolex you want and resale should be the last thing on your mind as all Rolex watches
loose money on a resale. A Rolex in my humble view is never an investment, rather a toy for yourself
to love and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum. I vote for the GMT IIc because I know it, but the others are terrific as well. You have a fortunate dilemma, because you can't go wrong!!

Joey, welcome. I think spending some time here gathering information prior to purchasing is a smart move. You'll be better informed when the time comes. Of course, the decision will be for you to make. It is said here often that you should try them all on and one of them will keep smiling back at you. That's true. You mentioned the GMT II in all black. It is fairly easy to get and change the bezels on the GMT II (just in case the dealer didn't have an all black in stock. Members here have done it frequently which might make it feel like you have two watches instead of one. Dan or someone else other than me can educate you on that better than I can. All of those you mentioned are great. Good luck with your decision.

Well, I would agree that trying them on is the best bet to see which your prefer. Having said that, of the ones you mention the GMT IIc would be my pick.
Depending on when you graduate it might be wise to see what might come out of the Bazel watch fair in April.

Welcome to TRF!As an owner of white dial Explorer II I sincerely recommend that one.Most elegant and sporty choice at the same time.But whatever you buy,be sure that it is Rolex.There`s nothing as good as good ol` crown!

Welcome Joey...you know what i recommend...GMT II-c. It is the newest Rolex model with the latest technology. My guess is that over the next few years, all the new models will come with the "changes" seen on GMT II-c. This includes the upcoming redesign of the Sea Dweller. It would suck (a tiny bit) if you bought something now and then later, a new redesign model comes out that is significantly better. My opinion.

Welcome aboard, Joey!

As an SD owner, I'd say go for the GMT-IIC.

I love my SD, but Rolex has made quite a few very nice changes on the GMT that give it a much more refined feel, especially in terms of the bracelet.

Still, as the other guys have suggested, you'll really need to go try each one out for yourself. We can talk on this forum till the cows come home, but it's not till you've got the watches in hand that you really appreciate the points being made here.

I suppose that some watch brands are like cars: gotta have the latest model. I guess right now if you want trendy get an Omega Planet Ocean. It's in the movies and a newly designed watch (homage to the old 300m). Trendy watches will eventually look outdated.

Rolex will "update" all models eventually. If you want the latest, then wait. But the classic designs are perennial. Just look at Rolex vintage models, they're thriving.

Welcome Joey! I know you from the ML forum (I have Vantage, Theater, Descent in my theater rm.) I recommend you go to an AD, and try on different models, and see what smiles at you. The GMT IIc has all the latest updates from Rolex, and is my favorite. Especially if you travel outside your time zone. The Sub is a classic. The Sea Dweller is more unique, but doesn't hold value as well. Either way, like others said, Rolexes are really not investments. You've done well to consider Rolex. There's nothing like getting a Rolex for a speial occasion.

BTW, have you decided which field you are going into? I am in the same profession.

of the 5.. I would have to vote GMT IIC. I believe that the no date sub and other sport models are headed in this direction. As far as sport models.. I have older subs, no date sub, and pepsi and coke GMTs and 3 Daytonas.. but I find myself wearing the GMT IIC more that anything else..

It is a matter of personal preference what you should choose, but personally I would suggest the SS GMT IIc!

I think GMT-IIC is at the top of the heap now....

I was not able to find one at CD Peacock when I was perusing the Rollies... but I have yet to explore the other Rolex AD in my area. I wonder if the GMTIIC command a price premium, and if they do - I'm not up for spending another few hundred/K.

If the GMTIIC is at 5-10% under MSRP, I think it's swing-able.

:)

Otherwise, no-date Sub or black GMTII.
