Shocking. But how about that, he made it this long. What a loss. I bet he was one complicated person in real life.

Marty Stuart took a photo of the first meeting of George and Keith Richards, who idolized him. They hit it off big time, of course.

You know he's someone special when he's revered in someone else's song.

Waylon Jennings, It's Alright:

George might show up flyin' high, if George shows up at all
But he may be, unconsciously, the greatest of them all
From the Beatles and me in Nashville, to the billies and the Rolling Stones
If we all sounded like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones
And it's alright
It's alright
It may not be right, but it's alright

I'm not generally a country music fan, but I loved George Jones. I collect vinyl LPs, and one of the greatest in my collection is "I Am What I Am" on the appropriately named Epic Records from 1980. I'm listening to it as I type. It contains Good Hearted Woman, If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will,) I'm Not Ready Yet and, of course, He Stopped Loving Her Today, the greatest country song of all time. His influence will be felt for years.

I was just reading the newspaper the other day and read where GJ was coming to Atlanta on his final tour. I thought to myself how cool it would be to see him before he retired. I was kinda surprised he was still even playing shows. RIP Possum.

The Possum's funeral was today and as I was looking back on his career, I thought of a song that Elvis Costello wrote for Jones when he was broke and trying to jump start his career.

Here's a live performance of "There's a Stranger in the House" by Costello and Jones.
