Is this the highest over estimate Explorer ever???

The below Explorer with a pre-auction estimate of $10-15k, went for over $180k!!! 18x the estimate!! Is that crazy??????

See the auction result here ...

Two or more highly competitive bidders -with deep pockets- going for a rare (unique?) piece like this... Throw out the estimate.

That said, IMO it was low to begin with, as auction estimates often are.

It is good to see these numbers. Makes me feel better about some pieces I've had for over 2 decades and didn't sell yet but this is not what the real market is or is bringing today IMHO.

there are for sure two different markets today ...

one is for fairly readily available pieces enjoyed by fairly normal collectors up to very big ticket...this market seems to be nice and steady, enjoyed by many and admittedly on the up as the world steadies itself a bit

then there is a separate market for the very rare and very exotic ...pieces available in tiny tiny number , either through manufacture or of quality survival rates .... if a piece fits into that category (whether it is real or perceived) ...the prices, the growth , the demand....are all off the charts ...for pieces like that there is no 'price' as such ...stuff i sold 12 mths ago, in some cases is almost double now....they rarely make market openly and when you see pics of them , it is after they are long sold......

Who can blame them? This is a piece that they may never get again could be their "grail" and im sure if they didnt get it they would regret it over the years

yep, the estimate was a "little" off on that one.

One of the all-time crazy auctions.

in any case...

this dial ( transparent glossy like in subs from the 50s but with a silver matt coat under instead of the usual black one ) is one of the rarest thing ever made by Rolex ;
untill now from the end of the 90s I have just seen :
1) a couple of 6610 ( one is from that auction )
2) 1-2 1016
3) 1 6205 ( unique dial ).
4) 2-3 6542-1675 PCG
I bet that were made no more than 10-15 pieces alltogether.
here is a 1016 :

Probably those wealthy bidders might have engaged highly-informed consultants to act and bid on their behalf. Otherwise, they would not be bold enough to put in astronomical bids, far above the estimates set by Christie's.

I said that this piece was going to sell for a hell of a lot more than 15k. Did not expect 180 though. Maybe I should stop seeking vintage rolexes and just start on modern patens with the way prices are going. My grails are going to be hundreds of thousands if not millions lol

This proves, an extremely rare watch which only a few enthusiasts and collectors know, has no market-price and defies all estimates. Whether it comes in stainless-steel or solid gold, it is immaterial. The rarity counts.

bravo Oceandweller ...

"The rarity counts."
this is THE point !
btw these special dials are well known by collectors ... at least by those with an high level of knowledge .
the " spread " between common watches and very rare ones has constantly grown since the end of the 90s on .. also due to internet ( forums and so on ),
and so will be in the future ...

I really appreciate the invaluable information that comes from your good-self all the time and other experts, as well as, enthusiasts.

Learning never stops, apparently.
