AP will always be a niche market with values held by enthusiasts & current sale prices. The average joe in the street has no clue what AP is. Rolex is the go to watch if you want to say "you've arrived" or made an achievement in life & that has a massive impact on collectability. I have noticed AP's sitting on dealer sites longer & longer. There was a time when the EOD's would sell within 24hrs. Now, it sits around for months.

If you want to collect investments go with certain Rolex & Patek's.

I think the OP is thinking about handing them down to the next gen kinda idea.

But honestly, we can't even predict the world in the next 20 years....maybe no one cares about watches anymore....kids just tweet and facebook with their implanted phone in their wrist or face....

Sad but true.

no i didnt have any idea to buy them and put in the safe till 50 years. just curious because all of the vintage market are dominated by rolex and patek. if we compare AP and rolex of course AP has niche market, but we can compare AP with PP right?? both of them have long history and still owned by family.

will probably hold its value at a guess, but will probably be much harder to flip compared to your rolex.

If I tilt my head to the left, I think I see the face of François-Henry Bennahmias in those leaves!

It depends on whether Lil Wayne and Jay Z keep spitting out verses about AP in 50 years... oh, wait :).

It is a valid question even if you buy things for yourself to enjoy now. No one wants to see their 5 figure (or more) "investment" or "purchase" turn into something with less value. If everyone here knew that their AP would be worth as much as a Timex in 20 years, how many of you would still buy one today?

A friends dad had a gold ro jumbo on a gold strap in the late 1980s. I had an instant love affair with AP from that moment onwards. Back then the watch was the latest in watch fashion......a quartz. At the time it cost over £20,000. Today my friend is struggling to get a part exchange offer for £6000 against a new Diver!

I don't expect any return from these watches, that's why I wear them for running, the beach, playing with my son and the dog. Don't get me wrong, I'm careful with them but unless its one of a very select few they loose money from day one and the position never improves.

Not a chance.

Buy them coz you love them, not as an investment. Just enjoy them!

You never know what the market will be like in the future. Any current brand might become collectable for one reason or another. Therefore, just buy watches that you will enjoy now. Anything more will be an extra.

On a side note, and as many know, AP is making some moves this year that will certainly impact values. With the closure of many AD's here in the US, they'll have a tighter leash around what it being sold at retail. My $.02 is that we'll see some price firming in the near future. In all reality, many of the AP's sold shouldn't be discounted as much as they are. Huge bang for the buck right now IMHO.
