Rolex 5512 Dial?
How can I tell if this is an authentic Rolex dial. I was informed the dial doesn't belong on this watch from members on this forum. My watch has a
5mil serial number but it has a meters first dial. Here is some history on the watch. Watch was last serviced in 96 by a local watchmaker, watch belonged to a 90 year old man that passed away. He owned the watch for 30+ years. The watch is currenly getting serviced here locally. I told the watchmaker to call me so I can take photos of the watch when its apart. At the moment, this is the best picture of the dial I have. |

Real simple,5 million is too late to be a meters first. Not to mention, it looks like gilt lettering which is going to be early to mod 60s. But the tick marks look funny, ut it may just be angle of pic.

Yes, the picture isn't the greatest. Will the dial be stamped with anything on the back indicating an authentic Rolex dial.

The problem isn't the dial itself. The dials real, it's just not original to the watch. That dial came from 1xxxxxx or 2xxxxxx sn (somone correct me if im wrong) If the dial hasnt been redone its worth as much if not more than the correct dial for your watch. So I wouldn't be too worried. Meters first dials are where it's at.

Need better photos, but it looks odd. Those minute markers look too uniform and too thick (again, could just be the photo.) The five-minute markers are usually a little thicker than the others. Regardless, that dial is not what would have been in the watch originally, unless it was re-done to make it look like an older dial, for whatever reason. The hour hand looks strange, too, as if it's been re-done or at least aged differently. Can you post better photos?

I indicated in your first thread what I thought you had based on the blurry pics: a gilt gloss dial likely from '64 to '65 perhaps early '66. This is based on the fact that there is no chapter ring, exclamation point, or underline. I can't tell if your dial has lume issues or not. When you park the hands covering the coronet and the print on the dial it makes it difficult for members to give a thorough evaluation of the dial. Try setting the hands at 9:15 next time with better focus. Authentic Rolex dials don't read Rolex on the back, rather they have the name of the company that made the dial.

Not sure of the etiquette of posting links to other forums - but take a look at the table at the bottom of this page. There is a table for 5512 & 5513 which I have always found it very helpful!

Really my main concern is, I just hope I didn't pay too much for the watch. I guess It's too late now, lol.

These photos couldn't be less helpful, but I'm guessing refinished dial.

My concern as well. Hands set at 9:15 with better pics will help.

To the OP, the pics of the 2 dials in the post above mine are the meters first matte. The Mk I is on the right and I believe the more rare Mk II is one the left. If the dial in your watch has Rolex written in gold paint, then it is gilt gloss dial and not a matte dial.

Is Rolex written in gold or white paint on the dial?

Yeah. I'm still going to go with refinished.
