Rolex Day Date 1803 question
been wanting to buy a gold Day date for a while. I am not really sure if I would wear it all the time since I have close to 10 watches in my collections now (but no gold watches) I want to stay as low cost as possible. Noticed that alot of 1803 are for sale and reasonably priced. Any suggestions or things I should watch out for? I would just buy the head and put it on a nice leather strap. Does any one have any recommendations or advice for me? I really dont know much about these watches. Thanks in advance.

1803 = acrylic and non quick set
18038 is later and = sapphire and quickset. I recently bought this 18038 on a strap. Get the sharpest case you can find - many of these beautiful gold cases have been thoroughly polished over the years. Put it on a strap and you will find occasions to wear it. I have mine on a more formal black alligator strap and love it |

The most important thing is to find one that has been seldom worn and put away for a spell (not a DD specific issue) but not neglected.
The other thing is if it has been kept original. Lots of them have aftermarket crystals, tubes and crowns. Often these get handed down in estates, etc. B ut new owners get a repair done and don't know it because they let someone without a parts account. If you have the means to buy with the bracelet, I'd do that and then sell that part on. Your net cost for the head will come out best that way IMHO.

Thanks guys for the great info. Russ, that is a sweet dd you have there. I have seldom seen cases that crisp for such an old watch. I would definitely want an all original watch if possible... but I can live with some franken parts. Does these watches have issues with movements?

Thanks Tom, I am not a movement expert - but I don't hear common complaints about these movements. I did pay for a service after I bought it - but that is typical when buying vintage.

Watch out for dents and overpolishing. Otherwise a great watch.
