Owning a Rolex- the less glamourous stuff

So I'll be finally going to an AD to try on a few Rolex watches tomorrow! Finally! I hope they have the 214270 in stock.

I have some rather unglamorous questions about Rolex ownership:

Storage: For those who live in an apt where maintenance & other staff can come in, where do you store your watches when it's not on your wrist? I'm thinking safety deposit box at the bank.

Insurance: For those of you who own a single Rolex, do you have insurance? I'm not sure if it is worth it. And for those that keep it at the bank, do you still have insurance on it? My understanding is that the FDIC does not cover the deposit boxes. So if a massive fire torches the bank- you've lost your watch.

Safety: Am I being too paranoid about watching (pun intended) where I go with a Rolex? If I'm driving to work, a restaurant, the grocery, etc. I've got no worries. My concern is when I'm walking around the street, like in NYC- I'd imagine it's much easier for someone to try to mug you when your walking home at night or rip the watch off your wrist in a crowded subway. I do a lot of walking all over- now granted I don't purposely take walks in the bad part of town but these days, crime can happen anywhere.

Work: I had a colleague who wore, if I remember correctly a datejust with diamonds, he just shrugged it off as a gift from his father-in-law. I'm OK with dealing with colleagues (well there's one supervisor at my new job I think who may take offense to a Rolex), but for those of you who work with people who are not fortunate as you as in homeless people, poor people, etc, do you find it is a bit tacky to wear a Rolex? I usually dress down a bit so that I'm professional looking but not giving off the 1% look that can send out the wrong message.

Thanks for your input!

The exp will fly under the radar to 90% of the people. Not like its a DD in solid yellow gold ..... Congrats in advance on the purchase

1. Store it on your wrist. If you must leave things in an apartment, find a good hiding spot. They make
2. Definitely insure all your valuable jewelry. And yes, I use a safe deposit box for the non every day wear and/or high value items.
3. A little common sense goes a long way. If I'm strolling the city or riding the subway I roll my sleeve down.
4. I'm a specialist physician, they know I'm a 1%er. Having said that, I won't wear a gold watch to the hospital. That's a little too over the top.

No one has ever remarked on my explorer in public.
It flies under the radar.

Firstly, no one will notice an Explorer as a Rolex. You'll be fine. Insure it and enjoy. Secondly, someone actually admitted to being a 1%er in this thread. Wow, just wow.

Get the insurance and wear it everywhere! If someone tried to mug you for it, give it to them, make a police report and a claim and get a new one!

Actually, you'd be surprised how much criminals know. Normal folks may not recognize an Explorer I as a Rolex but I work at a correctional facility and you wouldn't believe how many criminals recognize my Explorer. They don't know it's an explorer but they know its a Rolex. Now I wear a Casio Calculator watch to work just incase a lifer realizes he's got nothing to lose and assaults me for a watch.

Sorry man, I wasn't trying to make you more nervous than you already seem to be, but I thought it would be best if you we're aware. Anyway, solid advice was already given earlier... Use common sense and you should be fine.

I'm not rich and I've made no attempt to hide that fact.

I'm very lucky to be able to enjoy my retirement as I do, but I live rather modestly so that I can indulge the watch thing, my bowling, and some travel when time permits, donate to charitable causes and belong to organizations whose agendas I support.

I don't waste money on tobacco, booze, and fast women. I don't drive a fancy car and I wear cheap clothes.

Most of the people whom I know who claim they can't afford a Rolex, own their homes, multiple cars, airplanes, vacation homes, take multiple international vacations a year, and have stock portfolios.

So, no one can throw a guilt trip on me for owning a few Rolex watches and a number of lesser, but equally loved watches.

I keep my watches in a safe deposit box at the bank.

No one needs to feel guilty for owning what he's earned the money to buy.

Buying your first (and only) Rolex feels like big step, but seriously, don't worry about it.

- You can get a rider on your home insurance to cover the watch.

- You are buying a great reference - I love the Explorer but it is one of the least recognizable models, so don't worry about wearing.

- Just wear the watch 24/7 - don't worry about storing it.

- Lastly, you should be able to get 10% discount and no tax on that model from AD. If not, buy from one of the trusted sellers here on TRF, they can arrange a BNIB one for you, perhaps even papers in your name.

Congrats in advance!

Keep calm and carry on.

On the wrist if possible - any others can be well hidden - maybe a bit troublesome at times having to dig them out but a small price of security - I am in law enforcement so know all too well that a determined burglar will overcome many of the home type safes etc. also go for insurance - will add to your home premium but worth it! And lastly as someone here has already mentioned, enjoy the watch!

I think you are being a bit over concerned and paranoid about being a future Rolex watch owner.Millions and a mean millions of Rolex watch owners wear there watches daily in all walks of life in nearly all countries in this world today. And in the real world if you do not push your future Rolex into everyone face or announce you are wearing a Rolex. Then its doubtful if anyone will even look or comment or even care on whatever watch you own or wear.Have you ever had anything stolen from your home address or have been burgled several time.If not then your Rolex will be as safe at home as any other product you own in your home.As for insurance well that's up to you but just because you are about to buy a Rolex don't make you a target otherwise don't think anyone would buy any high end watch. In the end a Rolex is just a watch yes its expensive and keeps very good time but still only a watch. And Rolex watches are meant to be worn that's the whole point of buying one and not to bring anxiety like it your post.

You'll take your Rolex to the bank every time you put it off your hand? What if the bank gets robbed while you're there, you could get hurt.

No need to worry about that, since you'll have it on your wrist.
Besides that, concrete walls and steel don't really burn all that well.

I'd say that Brian has this covered. Don't over think this.
Wearing it on yor wrist is generally the safest place for it unless you're doing something that is going to really harm it, I wouldn't unload a truckload of bricks, nor do I wear mine when working on my car. I also won't wear it to any hospital appointments just in case I need some kind of test where the watch has to come off and be placed away from me.
People generally will not notice what you have on your wrist unless you flaunt it.
Many here use Jewelers Mutual to insure their watches, covers theft as well as damage. I use Jewlers Mutual, cost less than 100 per year to insure my Sub.
Congratulations and please enjoy your new watch!

Replying your questions :

1) Storage - Depend on your area. A safe is not a bad idea.

2) Yes, get it insured for peace of mind. It doesn't cost that much from what I learn.

3) Yes you are too paranoid. The watch in question (Rolex 214270 ) is rather understated and unlikely to draw attention like the bling gold Rolexes so no need to worry too much.

4) If you are working around the less fortunate, like the homeless or people in poverty, I think you should dress down and wear a simpler watch like a Timex or Casio. They probably will not notice but it doesn't feel right in such a situation. Just my 2 cents.

Insure it and then store it on your wrist. As has been stated, no one except WIS type people notice your watch.

Thank you for all your replies.

Now I just have to try to get out to an AD firstly to try it out. Then I have to make the wife understand!

So with the insurance- I'm with state farm- if I insure with them, they will cover theft at a gym, on the street etc? Or is it only if it gets stolen at home?

Your insurance representative is the best person to answer that question. Ask them to explain the terms, and then show you in writing where those terms are described. If they seem unsure ("oh, yeah, I'm sure that it's covered") then press them to make sure.

Only your insurance company and their brokers/agents can tell you for certain if your current coverage is adequate. We can tell you what we think or our experience, but we aren't on the hook if something happens and your insurance isn't covering you.

If I worried, or was that concerned, about owning a watch I would just use my phone to tell the time.
