Icon20 Pictures of Rolex 1016 Explorer

Hello friends!

I am been meaning to post these pictures for a long while, but the watch had been at Rolex Australia having it's five year check up.

This watch actually belongs to my father and he has had it for close to 30 years. Its amazing to see the difference between the 1016 and my 116710, for example the 'ticking' is distinctly different and obvious why, the weight is about 50 grams different, the look is very different (I love the look of both!).

Anyway enjoy these very crude pictures!

I must apologise for the poor quality photographs, I must clean the lense of my camera and remove the photographer's reflections for future postings!

Thank you all for your comments, it is indeed a timeless excuse the pun timepiece!

This is the watch that started me with my fascination of watches.

I will post some pictures of the whole collection after the battery charges on my camera (it has just died from overuse today with a trip to Lake Mountain doing some bush walking).

Thank you for the pictures. You say there is a 50g weight difference? Which is heavier?

Great shots

That 3. 6. 9. dial is a classic...Rolex really hit the nail on the head with that one...

Easily as recognizible as the cyclops, and just as classic..

My GMT IIc is 148 grams, the Explorer is 98 grams :o

I have a question about the accuracy of vintage watches though, this watch was serviced just before Christmas from RCS, however it is gaining 7 minutes in 4 days, does anyone else have a vintage time piece that gains this amount of time?

I will be taking it back to Rolex to re adjust it, but I have heard that heat can play a problem with regulating, is this true?

Thanks for the pics!

The 1016 is quickly becoming a grail for me. It would make the perfect entry into Vintage land...

Interesting you say that Steve, I will have to return it to Rolex again.

The reason I was asking is because I thought that maybe with older watches the percentage of accuracy would diminish...

Thanks for your comments :).

My worst vintage is +4 sec. a day. Several are from -1 to +2.

Thank you, Al, I must say that it is kept in very good condition, mainly its the crystal that needs to be buffed.

Thankyou.

Attila, what great pictures of a much loved timepiece - they're really good.

I'm sure we're all waiting for some more, when your batteries are charged.

Thanks for showing them to us.

Thanks, Attila. I have a thing for the Explorer; it's the purest and least ostentatious of the sport watches. Someday I'll have a 1016, but buying a vintage one can't compare to having one in the family for so many years.

I would definitely take it back. That is totally unacceptable. I have the hacking and non-hacking version and they are quite accurate (don't gain or lose noticably, I rarely check.) Thanks for pics, smudges and all.

Sometimes, when I completely take leave of my senses and start to think I can afford it, my mind veers towards the Explorer 36mm. It's lovely, even to a hardened 5513 guy like me.

$4925.00. Wow.

A "good deal" for a new Explorer from an AD would be . . . ?

It should as they are heavily counterfeited out of some parts of Asia. Try some established on-line vintage dealers like www.wannabuyawatch.com and www.bgrayjewelers.com and www.artoftime.com. They frequently have them with a money back guarantee. Not the cheapest, but authentic.

Here are some pictures of the 1016 with the 116710, I must say the GMT looks HUGE in comparison!
